I am trying to find out when William Price Barrett immigrated to australia. I think it must have been between 1851 and 1855 as he and wife Caroline had a son in South Australia in 1855. I'm pretty sure they had two sons before they came to Australia - (William Charles and Henry George). The info I've found here in South Australia is very vague. I'm looking for any info about this family as I think this is the line I'm related to. If anyone has info on this Barrett family I'd be extremely grateful as there seems to be a lot of brick walls. I'm trying to verify if William Price Barrett's son Henry George Barrett is my great grandfather.

That looks a more likely census find, LadyHawk.... :D
Is this the death of Henry George Barratt?
Henry George BARRETT aged 33 of Unley died at Unley 23rd August 1883.
No relative listed.
Ref = Ade 130/215
It looks very likely, as his mother was residing at Unley when she died.
Also there’s this marriage….
Emily BARRETT, widow, aged 32 married Joseph James WHITE,widower, aged 55 on 8th November 1883 at the Presbytery, Port Adelaide.
Fathers = Edward SCEARLE & James WHITE
Ref = PtA 137/657
Emily's age is a bit out, but on which marriage record?
I can’t see any children born to Henry George BARRETT & Emily SEARLE in South Australia. However, there is the following birth…..
Charles August BARRETT born 7th June 1874 at Underdale.
Parents = Henry George BARRETT & Sincere Amelia LAMBE

There is an online tree for William Price Barrett which suggests that Charles Henry Augustus BARRETT married twice, once in NSW and again in South Australia. I've found lots of information that may back this up, but won't post it until Shally returns and tells us who she thinks is the link to Henry George BARRETT.
Same tree has William Price BARRETT dying in Broken Hill in 1905......there is the death of a William P BARRETT on the NSW index for 1905 in Broken Hill, but guess what.....no parents listed!!!!! :-\

Thanks Dee, Ladyhawk and Cando for your info. I live in country South Australia and rely a lot on the internet to get info. What I've been trying to confirm was a link between William Price Barrett and Charles Henry Augustus Barrett. I thought I was barking up the right tree but couldn't get proof. Charles is my grandfather and his father was Henry George. The info on Williams parents, etc is great as I did not know their names. Thanks. From what I can work out Henry George had Charles before he married Emily in 1881 and Charles parents never married or obviously got together. William Price Barrett did die in Broken Hill but in 1892. Dee, you said you have info on family tree with William Price Barrett and Charles mentioned in it. I would be very grateful for the info as it could confirm the link I'm looking for. Thanks.

Shally many of us live in country areas and rely on the internet ;)
Have you Wm's death certificate ?
There is only one William BARRETT death on the NSW in 1892 and according to the burial register this person was 7 months old.
Now who died and was buried William P or W H? Unfortunately errors occur with transcriptions from paper based records.

You may have what I've found, Shally, but I started to check out what was on the online tree, as I have a deep mistrust of online trees as anything other than a guide.
As you say William Price BARRETT did go to Broken Hill, that verifies that more of the family went too. The names I've found seems to suggest they did.
As Cando has raised doubts about William P BARRETT's death in Broken Hill, if you don't have the certificate, I suggest you get a transcription. It will either prove or disprove it.
The tree mentioned that the child Charles HENRY Augustus BARRETT born to Henry George BARRETT & Sincere Amelia LAMBE. It then went on to list his marriage and his children, and I found them on the NSW indexes, which I presume you have done. Next I found his second marriage in South Australia, and his age is right to be the BARRETT/LAMBE child. The record also had the symbol D, and I found the following in Trove newspapers....
Divorce in 1923

In case you don't have the following details....
Charles Augustus BARRETT aged 74 of Prospect died on 28th July 1948 at Eastwood.
No relative listed.

Such a pity once again there is no relative listed!
I have a question to ask, so PM about to come.

Neither can I now, Cando....exactly why we should always check out whatever someone gives us.....my mistake! I think I read the 1906 for the other William P death at Gunnedah as 1905. :-[

Another question, though Shalley.....have you actually seen George Henry BARRETT's death certificate? If not, it may well be worth you getting a transcription from Genealogy SA.

Hi Cando
Yes I do have William Price Barrett's death transcript and he died in 1892 in Broken Hill
The WH Barrett you have found would be Walter Barrett, first son of Charles Barrett who died as an infant in 1896 in Broken Hill.
As you say, some of the records are incorrect and confusing.

Oh good...was a bit concerned as W H is the only burial at Broken Hill in 1892.
Where is Wm P buried?

Hi Shally,
I'd be interested in what you may have discovered. Samuel Hains Barrett married my great-grandmother's sister, Sarah Rossiter. The interesting thing from my point of view is that my great-grandparents, Mary Ann Rossiter and George Henry Howe named one of their sons Samuel Haines Howe. I'm wondering if there was an earlier family connection with the Haines/Hains family
-
William Price BARRETT and Caroline HAYNES had Samuel b. 16.8.1855 reg. 5/204 (cross referenced to Samuel HAYNES reg. 5/204)

My gggrandfather William Price Barrett married Caroline Haines 18 june 1850 in Stretton. Shropshire, England. This is where the Haines name has come from. Samuel Haines Barrett is brother to my ggrandfather Henry George Barrett. Hope this has helped. Let me know if I can help further.

Thanks, Shally. Do you know if there is any connection on the Haines side with either Samuel Howe (I don't know where he was from) or with Henry James Rossiter and Eliza Holloway/Holdaway (Somerset). I'm really trying to track down the Howe side before they arrived in Australia and given that Samuel's son, George Henry named his child, Samuel Haines Howe, it seems likely that there may have been a family link somewhere.
-
Hi BoundforSA. Which Samuel had a son George Henry - bit confused there!! I've not found any reference to the name Howe so far but Samuel Haines Barrett married Sarah Rossiter. Her parents are Henry Rossiter and Elizabeth Holloway. Samuel and Sarah had a son Samuel Ernest Barrett. Hope this helps.

Samuel Haines HOWE b. 1 Feb 1979 at Gawler.
Parents were George HOWE and Mary ROSSITER
Bar/215/94
Mary (second wife of George HOWE) was the eldest child of Henry and Eliza/Elizabeth.

My guess is that either George Howe's parents (Samuel Howe & ?) or Mary Rossiter's parents (Henry Rossiter & Eliza Holloway) were related in some way to Samuel Haines Barrett's parents so I'm just trying to work out where in the hope that it might shed more light on the family. It seems too much of a coincidence that Sarah Rossiter married Samuel Haines Barrett and that her sister, Mary Rossiter, would name her son, Samuel Haines Howe. The South Australian colony was still pretty small and they all appear to be mining families.
