Title: MIs for Botwnnog
Post by: Huwcyn on Thursday 03 January 13 09:11 GMT (UK)
I wonder if anyone has access to the above, or equivalent, for Botwnnog (or Mellteyrn). I'm looking for graves which refer to a farm called Cellar/Selar .

Hi
Looked at GFHS MI fiches at Caernarfon Archives this afternoon. Didn't have much time; didn't spot anything referring to Cellar/Sellar at St Beuno, Botwnnog or St Pedr, Mellteyrn. However there are 3 graves (out of 10) in Baptist cemetery Tyddyn D---- (can't understand my own writing, will check !). Inscriptions in Welsh - basic info below:

Hi

However there are 3 graves (out of 10) in Baptist cemetery Tyddyn D---- (can't understand my own writing, will check !). Inscriptions in Welsh - basic info below:
002 Robert Jones, son of John/Ann Jones, Cellar, Botwnnog, 11/11/1925, aged 53. Faithful deacon with the Baptists at Portmadoc for 13 years. Also Jane Jones, 02/12/1938, aged 74.

003 John Jones, Cellar, 24/06/1886, aged 76. Also Ann Jones his wife, 01/02/1901 aged 72.

009 Catherine wife of Griffith Jones, Cellar 23/01/1939, aged 68. Also Griffith Jones, 26/01/1951, aged 88.

There are a number of other churches not far away. It's possible that burials have taken place in other locations connected with the family, or nonconformist cemeteries.
Are the names above amongst those you're interested in ?

Hi
On fiche and catalogue it says TYDDYN Donnen, but book on history of Welsh Baptists says Ty'n Donnen. Baptists in the area started meeting in a house of that name, but landlord threatened to evict tenant if the practice continued. Someone else offered use of his house and later gave them a lease on a piece of ground to build a chapel, which was named Salem, but commonly referred to as Ty'n Donnen.
There's a grave, C021, at St Gwyniain, Llandygwnning:
"I gofio'n annwyl am William Griffith Roberts (Gwilym Selar), Botwnnog, a hunodd yn dawel Ionawr 29, 1990 yn 69 mlwydd oed.
Gorffwys mewn hedd."

Thanks again. I suspect, from what you've found out, that two of my ancestors might have been baptised in the chapel. do you know when the cause started ?

Hi
Didn't make a note of that; I think it was late 18th Century, I'll check sometime next week. I'll also check what Nonconformist Baptism records are available; if available they'll be on film at the Archives.

Hi
Checked at Caernarfon Archives, no records available for Salem. According to a book re Baptists by J Spinther James MA, published 1903, they started meeting around 1783/85, first at a farmhouse called Dyffryn. Tenant was, 'un oedd ddim yn proffesu' (not sure whether author means 'one who was not religious', or 'one that was not a supporter of the Baptist cause'). Tenant was threatened with eviction if he continued to allow them to meet there, so William Williams, Hirdre allowed them to meet at Ty'n Donnen. When that became too small he, Wm Wms, gave them a 99 year lease for 10 shillings a year on a piece of land to build a chapel; lease dated 10/03/1875.
The early members would have been adults and even if baptised at Salem, would have been previously baptised in their local church.

Noswaith Dda,

If it's any help by now, I was at Capel Ty'n Donnen earlier, and there was a grave or two in the very small graveyard which had Cellar on them, i'm afraid I took no pictures.

However, I do have a picture of the Chapel Gathering for 1906, (*) Moderator Comment: e-mail removed in accordance with RootsChat policy,to avoid spamming and other abuses. Please use the Personal Message (PM) system for exchanging personal data.
