My grandfather, John Stewart Colville used to say that there was a family connection to the Colville Steelworks in Glasgow/Motherwell. I have limited information on my Colville family and wondered if anyone here was or had researched the Colville Steelworks?
Thanks.

Try here http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/steelworks/Colville's.htm
I used to work in the Dalzell Works until three years ago and have sat in the original boardroom which is beautifully wood panelled & ornately decorated - Victorian splendour. Now operated by Indian steel company Tata the main office building is category A listed

As well as Colville steel works there is, still, Colville Park Social club, you could try there . The club should be in the phone book
My understanding is that it was set up for the benefit of the Colville steelworkers. As well as a social club there still exists a Golf Club and Bowling Section.
The estate itself is quite attractive although set some way back from the main road. I believe at one time the Old House was on this site
David Colville, himself, also set up a DUX medal system for the local primary school i.e. Calder Primary in Motherwell, who may well be able to supply further information. Best of luck.

Lots of pointers in:
Sons of Vulcan by Robert Duncan (Birlinn Ltd, 2009)
The Colvilles feature frequently in this book. It has lots of references to enable more detailed research. You could ask your public library to borrow this for you through the inter library loans system.

Hello
I too am looking into David Colville (1813-1898) - the founder of Colvilles. He is my 4th Great Uncle. When was your grandfather John born?
We are probably cousins. It would be great to make contact with you.
Kind regards

Hi, my grandfather, John Stewart Colville was born on 24.11.1921.
I know I had some Colville’s that moved to the Fife area and much earlier Colville’s that came from Ireland, but I haven’t explored the Irish side yet.
You never know, there could be a connection there somewhere.
Kind regards
Sharon
