Title: English Street, Dumfries 1890's
Post by: cupcake on Tuesday 01 January 13 10:19 GMT (UK)
Does anyone have old photographs of English Street, Dumfries from the 1890's.

My G Grandfather Robert Johnstone MOFFAT had his plumbing and gas fitting business at 35/37 English Street. Would love a photograph of his shop.

Any information would be very much appreciated.

Hi cupcake

Most of what I can see for the street seems to be around 1910, give or take:

The English Street street directory for 1911-12 shows here on NLS www.archive.org/stream/dumfriesdistrict191112dir#page/66/mode/2up

Now a listed building? www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/sc-26166-33-35-37-english-street-

MonicaL,

Many thanks for the addresses. Lovely to see all the old photographs.Doubt very much I will get a photograph of 35/37 English Street. Didn't realise it was now a listed building.

I remember my mother saying she lived at 35/37 English St. with my father and 3 year old brother, in 1946, until they could find a house.

Found the English Street directory for 1911-12 very interesting.

Kind regards,

cupcake

Hi Cupcake,

I hope you are still enjoying your research. It may be worthwhile contacting Dumfries and Galloway Council's Conservation officer - it used to be a Volkmar Nix (I'm not sure if he is still about though). This may be a worthwhile avenue to explore whether the Council has photographs of the old listed building.  Failing that, it may also be useful to search Historic Scotland's database as they too hold extensive records including old photographic imagery of the nations listed buildings.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Hi kojak,

Yes, I am still enjoying my research and, is great when I find things and make a connection. Sometimes though, I hit the odd brick wall.

Thank you so much for the information and will contact Dumfries and Galloway Council's Conservation officer and, the Council regarding photographs of the old listed building and see what they come up with.

Regards,

cupcake

Hello Ian,

I went onto the the above site and the very last photo of English Street does show my G Grandfathers plumbing business.

Could you tell me if I can get a copy of this from the Ewart Library.

Many thanks,

cupcake

 Hello Kojak,

Have been to the Dumfries & Galloway Council and Volkmar Nix is still about but, is off sick at the moment.

Spoke to another chap who went to the RCAHMS site and 33/35/37 English Street, DUMFRIES. This is a listed building: Circa1800, three storey tenement.

Unfortunately no old photographs.

However imchad posted an address and there is a photograph which shows my G Grandfathers shop.

Thank you for your help.

Hello again Ian,

Since my last post, I have visited the Ewart Library to see if the have the photograph of English Street.
They don't have a hard copy. However, they have a Digital one, which I have ordered. Not sure of the year the photograph was taken - but at a guess could be around 1890/1910.

Thanks again,

cupcake

MonicaL,

I have now managed to get 3 photographs of my G Grandfather's plumbing business at 35/37 English Street.
Now I have the task of putting dates to them.

Thank you once again.

Hi, theres a very good resource of old Dumfries photos on the "Old Dumfries" page on facebook and I think I saw old pics of English street there when I was hunting for old Queen street photos.
Good luck.

2 Harriet,

Yes, but if I remember, there weren't any of my G Grandfather's plumbing business.

However, I did manage to order a digital copy from the library, of English Street, showing his business. Just have to get year for this one.

Thanks,

cupcake

Hello Cupcake

We haven't spoken for a few years.  I'm Melissa , daughter of Alexander , son of Reginald Tupper Carnegie (d 07.12.1972) and Margaret Mein Moffat (d 07.12.1969), sister of George Campbell Moffat (d 26.10.1986, never married and no children), children of William and Christine Moffat, and William was the son of my great great grandather Robert Johnstone Moffat, the plumber at 35 English Street, Dumfries ... did you receive the photographs of his business premises/their flat and if so would you mind emailing me any that you have as I'd love to see them.

How are you getting on with your family tree?  How far back have you gone now?

By the way, my dad has a brother and he lives in Chessington.  He has one daughter , although you're only interested in the Moffats, I know ;-)

Kind regards
Melissa
