thats great thank you, Tryphena and Aquillia seemed quite unusual names which is why I wondered :)
-
Tryphena is not that unusual.
If you search Familysearch.Org for Tryphena , no Surname, born c 1821-1841, England, there are hundreds of them.
There are also Aquillas both male/female.

My grandfather Henry Small was born in Stathe Somerset according to his marriage certificate
He had a brother George
I am trying to find his birth to take me back .Both Henry and George say their father was James on their Marriage Certificates but I have hit a brick wall Any help or pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

Hello Jack. As a Romany myself. I don't recognize the surnames. But I travelled mainly in the north and Midlands. But Olso down south. Occupations can help. And gypsy name's can go back centuries. So we know our family name's. In the traveller circles. Rob.

Welcome to Rootschat darylresting,
Can you give us some dates please for Henry/ George.
When they were born and married ?.
Trish :)
-
Hi Trish 1120
Thank you for showing an interest.
Henry Small my grandfather was married in the Parish Church of Pawlett. July 1st 1890
to Harriet Hawkins he gives his age as 22 his father as James a Labourer
George Small married at the same Church May 6th 1886 to a Mary Ann Hucker age given as 20 father as James
Neither of the brothers could write.
I know where my grandfather is buried and found his Obituary in the local paper Nov 1936 said he was 67
Reading the bit about Traveling People coming from Ireland I wonder if this is the reason I am unable to trace his line back any further

thank you lady hawk for your reply
The henry small ebbw vale is indeed my grandfather and all the other info you kindly gave me I have been able to find
It is the fact of James the father I cannot fathom out.
Were they illegitimate?
If they were Elizabeth's children did she marry again and they took on the name of a step father
or Grandfather is this possible
I think the two boys living with relatives in 1881( next door to each other) is correct
.
I have been able to trace a living relative (cousin) who gave me a little information but after 2 visits to her she did not want any more contact, which is a pity, this was a number of years ago and I don't know if she is still alive, but I respect her privacy and would not try and connect her again.
She knew of an uncle of her fathers who went to live in Wales.
This fact made my grand father Henry and her grand father George brothers she had a picture of George and the family likeness is there
George witnessed Henry's marriage and Henry George's both with a X
George lived in the area known as Ford bridge

I have not seen the entry on the 1891 census but it looks to be the same family thank you.

At the moment I can only find a George born c1867 Somerset with father James Small his occ. Carter and he’s with him 1871/1881/1891 this George Small appears to have married Fanny Arrowsmith - so can be ruled out
Your George Small born c1867 Somerset gave his daughter Annie middle name of Priscilla a long shot perhaps named after Priscilla God(t)frey :-\ (see 1881 census already posted]
Have followed Priscilla through the censuses to see if there are any leads..............
1871c Priscilla https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VFJV-J88
1861 Priscilla & husband Coltrip 48 Farmer RG 9; Piece: 1623; Folio: 29; Page: 6;

Coltrip & Priscilla both aged 25
Coltrip GOTFREY f Thomas married 11 May 1841
Priscilla TUCKER f William
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01fo2/
Colltrip died age 56 in 1869 Bridgwater
Were there any other witnesses named on both Henry & George SMALL’s marriage certs that might help?
Did either m/c note father James as deceased?
None of George & Mary Ann’s children appear to have been named James
John, Clifford, Annie Priscilla, Evelyn Mary, Frederick A & Clara Dorcas
Nor Henry & Harriet’s children
William John, Alice Elizabeth, Susan Jane, Hannah,
Where they named after their wife’s family

Thanks for all your work, pretty sure Pricilla Godfrey is a relation.
William Small had a lot of Children one of them was Charlotte who Married Job Lawrence.
Henry living with them in 1881 as nephew
William Small c1803 married Ann Tucker,- Pricilla Godfrey's sister therefore Charlotte's aunt
Joseph Tucker could be a brother? to Pricilla and Ann
Looking at your info regarding George and Elizabeth (nee Tucker) it is beginning to look as if this maybe the right family.
William Small c1803 was the son of James Small and Mary Ganicott married 1799 they also had a son called James Baptised 1813 but I can't find the link to my George and Henry
I found a James Small marriage in Free BMD Dec qtr 1838 which is the wife?
To answer your Questions neither say that the father is deceased on their MC
Henry my Grandfather had George and his sister-in-law Sarah Ann Hawkins to witness
George his brother had Henry and Dorcas Hucker his sister in law
Harriet Hawkins who married Henry her parents were John and Jane
Parents and siblings of Mary Ann Hucker married George Small 1866

Charles 22 son
