RootsChat was launched on 31st. December 2003
see [About us] (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/aboutus.php)
and RootsChat in the Public Eye (http://surname.rootschat.com/lexicon/rc-media.php#westernmail)
Year for year, it grew ....
1 year old (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,27110) ...
2 years old (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,115557) ...
3 years old (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,202887) ...
and grew ...
4 years old (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,274948) ...
5 years old (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,349844) ...
6 years old (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,426827) ...
and grew ....
7 years old (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,503573) ...
8 years old (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,580118) ...
and now, on Monday 31st. December 2012,
RootsChat is 9 years old !!
This year we've had the "painters and decorators" in, which has given the forum a new look,
and to the joy of many, has made it easier to view on various hand-held devices (iPads, mobile phones, tablets, Kindles, etc).
It's a bit like in real-life: now the main work is done, it take's ages to get the details right ...
pictures hanging up in the right places, finding stuff we put away somewhere ("in a safe place"), etc, etc.
So the fine-tuning will still continue for a while in 2013.
But before and after the upgrade, life goes on, with
- lookups,
- deciphering,
- photo restoration,
- technical help,
- "what does this mean ..",
- "How can I ...",
- etc.
- etc.
The resulting discussions, questions and answers brought our total postings count over the 4.000.000 mark.
New members joined, and researched alongside the "old" members.
And what is always heartening, some of the new members joined because of this, and similar reasons:
I was researching my family history on the internet and I came across your topic about my GG-Grandfather / Grandmother / Greataunt etc..."
But apart from the good things, there was also much sadness as we took leave from some of our Rootschat friends ...
R.I.P. Tisgrannie (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,582131) JillJ (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,586400) RabbitB (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,595537) Taidquest (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,603215) Alex Liggins (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,611069) GenieColgan (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,614730) and others.
RootsChat isn't primarily a "social networking" site, but for the regular visitors to the Totally Off Topic Bit (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,286.0.html) and in the Chatroom (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/RootsChatterBox/RootsChatterBox.php), where RootsChatters can let their hair down, relax from the rigours of Family History, vent a few feelings, find comfort and support, have a few laughs, it certainly must seem so.
We will soon all be raising our glasses to toast in the New Year, but before we do, on the 31st. of December, remember to raise your glasses for a very special toast ....
Happy Birthday RootsChat
and
Thank You, Sarah and Trystan
for having the idea,
and then having the courage, the strength and the patience to implement it.

Untill I can get a good speach written up... this will have to do...
Congratulations RC and a HUGE THANK YOU to Tristan & Sarah.

It'll be a double party for the YTG on Totally Off Topic..... :D
Seriously, well done to all concerned with RootsChat, especially Trystan and Sarah.
And ....
Happy Ninth Birthday RootsChat!

Not to mention the MASSIVE legacy that the information in this forum has created and is creating for future generations. Happy Birthday and thankyou T & S.
-
9 years old! What an achievement?
Congratulations to Trystan, Sarah, Berlin Bob and the rest of the team who work behind the scenes!
It is great to look at the earlier birthday posts - and read the comments by some old 'faces' that still frequent the boards, and some who no longer visit.
Rootschat certainly keeps me out of trouble. Love it! And with the new look, I'm sure it will attract many new members in the year to come.
:)

VERY BEST WISHES
.. and here's to many more
-
I stumbled across the site nearly 5 years ago and since then have been hooked. Over the years I've made so many good friends through the TOT boards and have had so much help from people on the more serious boards.
I would like to thank Trystan and Sarah for starting RC and all the Mods and others who work behind the scenes to make this such a great site.
Happy Birthday RootsChat and may there be many more.

Huge congratulations to RootsChat on its 9th birthday and well done and thanks to Sarah and Trystan and all the others who have done such a splendid job with the decorating. Playing with RC on my brand new tablet-toy is a delight - so quick and seamless.
It's nearly 7 years since I discovered this amazing site with its wealth of information and offers of help - long may it continue.

Happy birthday RC, and many thanks to T and S for their grand idea, and to all the mods who keep us running smoothly!
-
And from me, too, Birthday Wishes to RC on its 9th Birthday; and many, many thanks to Trystan, Sarah and all the Mods for all the hard work setting up RC and subsequently holding things together. I am a comparative newbie, having stumbed into RC four years ago after googling an ancestor and finding there was a thread on here about his village. And after a couple of visits, and some very kind responses to my queries, I was hooked and have been a regular visitor ever since.
Kind regards
GS

Oooh, another celebration. Great!
I won't mention names, but if I hadn't found RootsChat then I probably still wouldn't know who my father was - that's how important it has been.
Many thanks and respect to all those who help others, and for Trystan and Sarah for providing the means to do it.
And thanks, Bob, for mentioning those who sadly passed on last year.
Happy Birthday, RC!
'Hat.

Just wanted to add my thanks to Trystan, Sarah and all the mods who have kept us (more or less) on the straight and narrow for the past 9 years :)
I haven't been posting for 9 years but it's certainly over 8 since I found you and haven't wandered far since. I've found some genuine friends on here and a LOT of help with my research.
Most people have been kind to me and supportive .... I've been using a great many family history sites over the years but this is the one I come back too the most.
So..... many many thanks and
HAPPY 9th BIRTHDAY ROOTSCHAT!

Happy Birthday. I didn't find the site until Feb 2007, but am glad I did. Here's to lots more happy Rootschatters joining us.
-
Wow :D Thanks so much for the Cards, Best Wishes and those amazing trees.
It is a little sad that we have lost a few RootsChatters, they may have gone but their stories about family, and words of Wisdom are still here to be found.
We raise our glasses to our Lovely Moderators who have been wonderful and very supportive and all fantastic rootschatters who bring delight to our shared passion.
Sarah and Trystan :) :-*
Right lets pass round the cake ;)

I have been a member of Rootschat since 2005 and find this is the VERY BEST site for genealogy questions and the most friendly. I can not believe how so many people are so knowledgeable and willing to pass that on.
A big thanks to all for effort, information and most of all for giving their time.
And Happy 9th birthday. :) :D ;D

:) Happy 9th birthday to Rootschat and I really like the new look. Thankyou.
-
A bit late finding this thread, as I've been away sans computer ( :o ).
Many many thanks to Tristan and Sarah - and all the lovely Mods - for keeping our favourite website going.
And Happy Ninth Birthday, RootsChat!
How big a partly can we plan, for the 10th? :D
-
I have been on Rootschat since September 2004, so almost an original member lol. It is the best ever genealogy site.
-
I have used the site since almost the beginning and am so glad that it has taken off the way it has.
Am loving the new style. You could say it's like having had its "roots" done.
Keep up the good work everybody.

Where has this thread been hiding?.. Can't believe I missed it... You're a modest lot I know at the sharp end of things but I'm thrilled to blow the trumpet on your behalf cos this really is the most fabulous site for just about everything to do with genealogy and generous people. Rootschat is as important to many of us as an everyday regular cuppa ... it's just part of our lives :-*.... Thanks to Trystan and Sarah and the Moderators for making us all part of such a "Family"
We must start arrangements for a SOOPER DOOPER MEET for the 10 year anniversary ... and start saving up now ! ;) ;D

I see that I am not the only one who missed this thread when it was originally posted.
My most humble apologies and many belated birthday wishes to Trystan and Sarah. I have had many happy hours on this site and hope to have many more in the future.
I always remember nearly meeting you both in the early days when there was a small (very small) Swansea meet. Your car broke down I seem to remember or did you get lost in the borders. :-\
Anyway thanks again for your brilliant idea for this popular genealogy site.
Regards

Happy Birthday Rootschat
I just checked when I registered with Rootschat and it was April 2004 so it has been a long association with a wonderful group of people who have helped me with so many problems and I now have a near complete tree which I wouldnt have had without the help of rootchatters.
Cheers
