Title: 1554 North Yorkshire will help
Post by: en2gen on Sunday 30 December 12 02:41 GMT (UK)
The is the will of Robert MERRY of Lockton (North Yorkshire) dated 18 May 1554. It's quite short; but there is very little of it that I can decipher. I am not so much interested in every word, but I am interested in names and relationships. I have found the following:

Line 8    to the children of Robert Merry my sonne (but what is he leaving?)
Line 9    (at end) William Merry my sonne (possibly two other people mentioned before that?)
Line 11  to Elizabeth my wife & William Merry my sonne (who he makes executors)
Line 12  possible another John (surname?) mentioned

I have been trying to sort out the MERRYs of Lockton for about 2 years now and have run into a brick wall. Looking at these earlier wills is an attempt to establish some families who may be missing from the parish records. Any help appreciated.

Well, this is pretty helpful and I am very appreciative. There are some surnames here that make sense based upon the families I know were in Lockton in later generations. Pierson, Storey, and probably Boddy (instead of "Cody"?). You have helped me out a LOT! Many thanks.

probably Boddy (instead of "Cody"?)

Hi Louise, I'm not sure about that. In the probate endorsement at the bottom,
one or two of the witness names are repeated - see Storie and Kodie.

Well, I shall keep that in mind when I check surnames in the PRs...if I can find them that early. I have about 100 years of linking to do to get from my confirmed line back to this one. This family was in Lockton forever, and, of course, they all named their children, William, Robert, John, etc and married women named Elizabeth, Mary, et al, so the sorting gets challenging. But your work is most helpful and appreciated! I'm in process of searching and transcribing other MERRY wills in this effort. I may be back for more help!!

Thanks again,
Louise

Hi I believe I have family connections to you. I am related to a William Storey of Lockton ,he was one of the witnesses to your will. He died in 1567 and also left a will.I also have an early record of a marriage between a Merry and a Storey. If you are interested I will find the paperwork. I have rather a lot of it as I have been researching the Storey family for around 15yrs. I was just amazed to see your post which I realise is over ten years old. It popped up on Google.

I also believe we have a family connection, or I can at least put you in contact with someone who shares the Storey line. I'm not sure what is allowed on this forum, as far as sharing email addresses. Perhaps you do? I have just now read your message that is almost 2 months old. Luckily I found it again by doing a Google search as you suggested. Like you, I hve been working on this line for MANY years!

Gosh, I think my wife has a connection to both of you!
not only that, she has connections with three of the names mentioned: Merry, Boddy and Storry.
I believe John Merry (my wife's 7Ggrandparent) married Mary Storry in 1721. their son Robert married Ann Boddy in 1750. Does this tie in with info you guys have?
the above is about as far back as i have got to so far.

I have not received a reply from "Piaf" who says they are related to William Storey....I would really like to make contact but don't know how outside of this forum.

However, "Drcrinkles" in response to your post. Please see the note I have about the ancestors of the Robert Merry who married Ann Boddy in 1750:

This Robert should not be confused with another Robert Merry, son of John and Mary Storry, baptised in the same year but who died in 1727. Many researchers associated THIS Robert with that family, wrong. He is Robert, "son of Robart MERREY" Lockton PRs.

So, the Robert Merry who married Ann Boddy in 1750 is actually the son of Robert Merry who married Mary Plumber in 1723.

If you know how to contact me further so we can exchange email addresses, I would be happy to share research with you.
