Good Afternoon.
A Newbee on the forum (found via google this afternoon) :)
I have been trying to research my family tree (Burgess) for the past few years, but with the arrival of 2 kiddies and work commitments it all came to a standstill. I'm now ready and raring to go again.
I got as far as my Great great Grandfather last time (I think) and am hoping to go back even further.
Looking forward to a long and insightful stay on the forum ;)

Ian,
Quite understand your sentiments about "paying silly money" but unless you give us some other information other than just the "Burgess family" those of us who have paid silly money wont be able to assist you.

LOL - Sorry Tom and thankyou....
Ok, My late father was David Michael Burgess, born Sept 1937 (baptised in Oct 1937)
His father was Frank Burgess who was the son of David Burgess (born 1876?) who perished in the minnie pit disaster of Halmerend in 1918.
I thought I'd traced his father but I am unsure as I think I may have missed a generation...
Thankyou again :)

Seem to be quite a number of the Burgess family involved in that mining accident:
http://www.cmhrc.co.uk/site/database/result/65800.html
I take it that David was married to Frances Ellen Dean, and with two children, Mabel & Ernest John in 1911.
Or David married to Ethel Ann Warburton with 2 children Fred and Eva- in both cases the men were involved in the mining industry-the latter being a coal miner & Hewer of 8 Hope St, Bignall End, Newcastle, Staffs. That family in 1901 were living in Hope street, where another Burgess man lived called Thomas with his family.
However, with a name like Frank Burgess, maybe he was named after his mother, Frances, maybe he was called Francis. However in Free BMD there is a Frank born in September qtr of 1916, in Newcastle under Lyme mother's maiden name Warburton.

Ian,
No doubt you have seen this before, probably in a local rather than National Newspaper:
The Times, Tuesday, Jul 20, 1920; pg. 20; Issue 42467; col F
Safety In Mines. Rules To Prevent Explosions.
Category: Business and Finance
The report of Mr. W. Walker, Chief Inspector of Mines on the disaster at the Minnie Pit of the Podmore Hall Colliery near Halmerend, North Staffordshire-which took place as far back as January 12, 1918 was issued yesterday by the Home Office. It is accompanied by seven large and elaborate plans of the colliery workings. It is explained that the elapse of so long a period between the accident, in which 155 lives were lost and the holding of a Coroner’s inquest (In October 1919), and the formal enquiry was due to the fact that the Bullhurst seam gives off firedamp freely and is also liable to spontaneous combustion. Hence persons carrying out exploration work after the accident were forced to wear breathing apparatus, and progress was necessarily very slow.
The Inspector states that he had come to the conclusion that the explosion originated in or near the goaf at the top end of No. 4 district in the Bullhurst Seam, and that the cause was an explosion of coal dust which traversed roads reached by Banbury Dip Crut in the Bullhurst and Banbury Seven Feet Seams to which the force and flame of the explosion were confined. The igniting cause of the explosion of gas in or near the goaf was, in his opinion, either a defective safety lamp or sparks produced when the Bull-dog stone over the goaf fell. Of the two, he thought the former was the more probable cause.
What's a goaf?

There's also a David b.C.1876 Audley to John & Matilda who had a brother Frank.

John Burgess/32/engineman/Audley
Matilda/28/Audley

Edna/8/do
David/5/do

Thomas/11months/do
I think this is the David married to Frances Dean as the Reg.Dist. is correct for Audley

Your Great-Grandfather David is mentioned on this thread;

On the other thread it states David was the husband of Ethel Ann and that they lived at Ravens Lane Bignall End.

Yes definitely Ethel Ann Warburton who had son Frank in 1916.
It doesn't look like there's a missed generation.
Can't be the other David as he was still at home in 1901.
Ethel Ann Warburton & David Burgess married in 1898.
Mar.1898/Newcastle L/6b/73
He appears to be the son of David & Sarah but you might have to get their marriage cert.

Thankyou Chaps :)
From my research I believe that David is the son of David and Sarah, from Bignall End (Ravens Lane)
All I can confirm is that David was the father of Fred (who worked with him at the Minnie - http://northstaffsminers.btck.co.uk/TheMinniePitHalmerend) and Frank who was my Grandad and My Great Aunt Ethel, who unfortunately passed away last year...
I am certain that David & Sarah are my Great GREAT Grandparents, but with so many Burgess's in the area I have been unable to get much further.
I find its only right to pass on what I can find as I have a 18 month old son (Noah David Burgess) who is the only male Burgess (to my brothers jealousy :-\).
Again thankyou for your help and time.... :)

I had missed a Generation....
Id gone straight to my great GREAT Grandparents (David Burgess & Sarah Hollins).
So as it stands I'm almost certain it goes like this...
David M Burgess (my father) (1937 - 2007)
Frank Burgess (my grandfather) (1916 - 2004)
David Burgess - my great grandfather (1873 - 1918, killed in the Minnie Pit)
& then David Burgess (1848 - ?!? ) (married to Sarah Hollins - 1868 in Wolstanton).
Im doing some more digging via the FREE resources and found that David Burgess (1848) was the son of somebody with the surname Shufflebotham... Interesting :)
Any keen diggers around that could possibly offer assistance on how many Davids I can get onto 1 family tree?!? lol
-
David who was to marry Sarah Hollins is showing in 1851 as the son of a William and Mary Burgess.William showing as born in Audley in c 1827.Mary shows as born in Barthomley Cheshire in c 1828.
HO107/2001/631/29.
These are almost certainly the William Burgess and Mary Shufflebotham who married at Newcastle St George in 1845.

:o WOW - thankyou William... something else to work at :)
Im disappointed it wasnt another David though lol

Hi
I have not found any connections to the Burgess family but I have both Farringtons and Hollins, the Farringtons originate from Barthomley but later moved to Audley and Chesterton. Who are the Farringtons on your tree?
-
Nancy Farrington was my Grandmother.
She married Frank Burgess and went on to have David (my dad), Susan and Christopher.
Hope that helps?
I understand she had a cousin (or my dad did) named Ivor Farrington from Chesterton also
-
Hello Ian
I too am a newbee at this. The Burgess name caught my eye. There's probably no connection but my great grandmother(x4) was born approx. 1800. Her name was Sarah Burgress and was born in Audley Newcastle-Under Lyme. Not sure if this is the same Audley.
She married Samuel Lawton in 1825 in the St. James church.
-
Hi Ian
I do have a Nancy Farrington on my tree and I also have Susan Farrington and am in touch with one of your other relatives as this is where I got the information about Susan Farrington from. However I don't seem to have an Ivor but this does not mean to say he was not related. I will have to look into this further. Will let you know when I have more information.

I'm trying to trace my heritage back, and it seems I've hit a roadblock in Audley/Staffordshire. my great, great, great, great grandfather was George Burgess born 1793 in Staffordshire, died 1877 in Colchester, Nova Scotia, Canada. George's father's name was John Burgess and his mother's name was Mary Corn. John and Mary were married in Staffordshire. This is all the information I've been able to find this far back. Any help would be much appreciated.

try looking at Cheshire records... Burgess' within Audley Parish could have lived in Butt Lane, which is on the staffordshire / Cheshire border, so although living in Butt Lane Staffordshire, could have records registered in Cheshire... does that make sense??

This is my first post on the Forum. I’ve been researching my ancestral roots over a number of years, I’ve found myself with. More time on my hands to investigate avenues. I am a Burgess by birth and having chased back my roots to the Audley Burgesses after a couple of dead ends searches.
In my tree George is my 3rd Great Granduncle
I believe that George Burgess (1793 to 1877) was Born in Audley 11th September 1793 to John Burgess (1753-1810) and Mary Cain/Corn (1765-1831).
There is a headstone in the St James the Great Churchyard Audley, amongst a cluster of Burgess graves. George is believed to have married Jane Moody (1797-1833) in Halifax Nova Scotia in 1826. She is Canadian by birth.
The went on to have 9 children including a Coolingwood and Nelson amongst others.

The father of John Burgess was Samuel Burgess 1720 to 1774. His father was William Burgess 1683 to 1732. William Burgess spouse was Ellen Brown 1687 to 1729. The spouse of Samuel Burgess is a little more confusing. We know it’s a Mary, but there’s a Emberton or Lawton quoted as being Samuels spouse.
I hope this helps.
