I have a record of MARY ELIZABETH STRONG marrying WILLIAM HIGHTON in Wigan Lancashire on 12 August 1905. I can only find a record of 1 daughter IRENE HIGHTON born during Dec Qtr 1906. These details I got from 1911 England Census but can't find any further information as to Irene's marriage or any other children born to William or Mary Elizabeth. The rest of the Strong family moved to Canada around 1910/1912 but Mary's brother, FERGUS STRONG b 1888 returned to Wigan in 1913 with his wife Mary (nee GREEN) in 1913. Is anyone researching either the STRONG family or the HIGHTON'S who could give me any further information please?

EDITH HIGHTON baptised 14th sep 1909 at St Mary ,Prestwich - parents William and Mary Elizabeth
did they move from Wigan to Prestwich - where are they in 1911 census ??
with mothers name being Mary Elizabeth ,I would be tempted to check Edith out as she looks a possible sibling of Irene Highton ...good luck

ADDED Re - Irene Highton marriage in Birkenhead -1933
also Edith Highton to Frank Walkden also at Birkenhead june qtr 1927
so possibly she is another child of William and Mary Elizabeth ??....you will have to find EDITH HIGHTON in 1911 census and see who she is with and where ???

Information removed
Are there 2 Highton families - both William married to Mary Elizabeth? ???

Hi
The marriage between Mary Elizabeth Strong and William Highton was in 1905 at St Catherine, Wigan

Thanks KGarrad....the Birkenhead marriage was Edith M Highton - so I was a bit sceptical ...
little Edith who died aged 0 ...it was the mother being Mary Elizabeth that gave it a good possibility ..
would a death certificate have Mothers Maiden name on it ??
I suppose the ONLY way of knowing is to purchase Edith Highton birth certificate b 1909
The baptism is on www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html
father William is a Cloth Merchandiser ....what is his occupation on the census returns ??/
allan
-
I suppose if he was a Salesman - he could have swapped Cloth for Tobacco ??...probably went where there was most money to be made ...
I think a birth cert is the only way to prove it isn`t it ?
allan
ADDED...Irene Highton baptism is also on Lan-opc - fathers occupation Commercial Traveller - so a salesman ....

Free BMD has a marriage 1908, Bury- possible spouses William Highton and Mary Elizabeth Chadwick
1901 has a William and Margaret Highton with some children born Prestwich
Free BMD has a death for a Margaret Highton 1906 Prestwich
This may be the answer to the Hightons of Prestwich.

Thanks Heywood....so probably disregard Edith b 1909 ....mother was probably Mary Elizabeth Chadwick
cheers

The marriage for Irene Highton and Thomas McDowall in 1933 was at Tranmere, United Reformed Church(Old Chester Road)

Irene Highton birth registered Tranmere 1907

Garstonite
I agree that Irene Highton is probably the one I'm looking for. The 1911 Census shows her at aged 4 and is the only child born to the marriage (alive or dead).
K Garrard - As I have said the 1911 Census doesn't show any children of the marriage who subsequently died.
Heather Julie - Thanks for that info - I has the date but not the church where the marriage took place
and finally Heywood - Not the correct family - Just a big coincidence another William Highton marrying a Mary Elizabeth.
Thanks to all of you for going to all that trouble to assist. I'm down under in Australia so not able to get to any Records Office in Wigan to check personally.

Hello again,
As HeatherJ has said, there is a birth for Irene Highton in Tranmere in 1907 so the Birkenhead marriage is likely to be her.
(Not sure whether you were thinking it was the Wigan Irene.)

Not sure if this info is of any use---William's father John died[age 59] or was buried in Lower Ince Cemetery on the 19th Feb 1912 ,grave number Q139 in the C of E section. His address was 5 Cecil Street.Aso in the grave are buried another John age 53 2/4/1928 and Ann age 76 4/6/1928 both of Cambridge Street.Obviuosly must be related

Following my last post Ann was William's mother ,she died 30th May 1928,her estate was just over £408.John who is buried inthe same grave as John and Ann is their son.

William's address on the 1905 marriage is also 5 Cecil St (Lan-OPC), so the burials match up properly.
