Title: controlling Google
Post by: Pejic on Wednesday 26 December 12 13:35 GMT (UK)
(a) I think the new site layout and facilities and colours are a huge improvement - well done and thank you Trystan, do not be depressed by the shallow minded negative comments; you done good!

(b) nothing to do with the changes: Google knows I am in Bulgaria so insists on translating what it can on my search results into Bulgarian (which is largely unintelligble to me as it rarely relates to shopping, alcohol or road directions).  I have tried to change my location but it only offers me the possibility of other Bulgarian locations. Does anyone know how I can make it deliver content in English please?

Does it make any difference if you go to advanced search and change the location you wish your results to come from?

I know that google have been 'fiddling' with this, and now, for every single google search you make, you need to go through the palaver of going to advanced search and then selecting your location if you want results from a specific country. The default appears to be the USA.  :P

There used to be a box to the side of your searches where you could easily change location, but now you have a couple of extra steps to go through, which is tiresome if you are doing a lot of googling. A most unwelcome, time consuming and annoying change.

I am not sure if this is related to the problems you are having, or if it will 'fix' it though. Good luck.

Thanks everyone, but no progress, it seems that my ip address is the problem though. I will try asking them to set my ip address to treat me as though I am in UK (though they say it may take them a month implement it)

do a search on google, on the page of results on the top right you should get a settings box. if you click on that you have the option to change your location. im in oz but have it set for the uk and it works no probs

Thanks Perth Tiger, but it will only let me change to another Bulgarian town or post code.

Well I have tried using their link to report an ip address problem, but it does not let me report what my problem is!

I don't know whether this will help in your case, but in "Search Settings" I changed the "Language" option to English, and this seems to work for me in France.  There's a sub-heading "Which other languages would you like to see in your search results?", where you can deselect everything except English.

(I haven't changed my location.)

Thanks Rambler, but I have ben unable to find anywhere where I can change my location to anywhere but somewhere else in Bulgaria. Their help suggests I will see "Location" at the left hand side of the "preferences" page, but I do not see "Location" anywhere.

??? I was blaming it on a Firefox update, didn't think about it being Google  ???

That option used to be on the left hand side of any Google page, but disappeared with the new layout, so they need to change their help suggestion.  ::)

I rarely use Google these days, partly because of the problems described, and also because they seem to want to take over from Microsoft in world domination, and to build a database of everyone's online activities >:(

Fortunately, Firefox and its add-ons allow you to disable many of the hidden Google applications, but I'm sure they will keep working out ways to circumvent them.

There are other search engines . . . just 'google' for them . . .  ;)

I don't see an option to change my location at all!  Under "Search Settings", the second option I see top left is "Languages", which I changed to English.  (Maybe I have a different version?)

I don't know if this is helpful, but AltaVista (Yahoo) offers the option to  "Search only for pages written in one or more of the following languages:"

I haven't tried it, in case I can't read the option to return to English......!

"Advanced Search" is now at the bottom of the page. From here you need to select country from the pull down menu after every google search. If anyone knows a way around this I would be very grateful if they could share it with me. I use google an awful lot so this process is very tiresome.

You're right Mike - they are trying to take over our world - pretty disturbing.

Have a look here http://www.thesearchenginelist.com/ for search engines.

For some searches a metasearch using something like www.dogpile.com is helpful.

Google's policy of collecting data on its users does have one benefit: by learning what sort of things the user is searching for, the search engine can try to deliver the results you want. That's why different users get different results for the same search.

Yeah . . . I suppose that's why, when I do a search for size 12 shoes, Amazon (or it may have been ebay) suggests that I might also be interested in some size 9 . . .  :-\

. . . and it's possibly why, after I bought a new camera, I was bombarded with emails suggesting others I might also like to purchase . . .  ???

I occasionally use google UK but usually get bounced over to the US site for the results. I think they're trying to be too clever . . . and failing miserably as far as I'm concerned

Yeah, I love the ads too Mike!  >:(

I am finding myself thinking twice about searching for anything via google these days in the fear that I will be bombarded by animated ads for that product for months. I even try to 'override' my ads by searching for something I won't miond seeing over and over and over again, like puppies, but I haven't had much luck with that yet.  :) They need to sort themselves out for me to take any notice of their ads, that is for sure. I am avoiding some of the sites which are still trying to flog shoes to me that I searched for 8 months ago.

There are companies offering 'IP cloaking' but of course they will want some money for doing it.  Typically about £50 a year.  But you can change your IP country as often as you like.
