Title: driver manager
Post by: Hamish84 on Wednesday 26 December 12 05:57 GMT (UK)
Hi there,
Why does Norton, Microsofts subsidiary company for driver manager, warn you that a download from an unrecognized  source is ready to be added to your hard drive? Should'nt they know if these are safe? Is just another way to sell more software.
My second try to have this sent.
Hamish 84.
PS, Just back, have to get used to the new format.

For a start Norton belongs to a company called Symantec.
Could you please advise what your doing for this message to appear.
 Regards Brian

You don't need such software anyway, it's just another way of obtaining your cash  >:(

To download a particular driver for a device the first place to go is the website for your particular device. (Be aware some sites contain spyware, not what you want on a computer)

Hi Brian (Calverley Lad),
Microsoft initially sent me to the Norton download when I enquired of them info on drivers!
Driver update on driver manager appears automatically when I boot up my PC. Most times I ignore it, but it is a bit of a pest.
Midase tells me I don't need such software anyway so maybe I am doing the right thing by ignoring it!

I would investigate the removal of driver manager from your computer.
(Still find it hard to believe Microsoft directing you to Norton for drivers, Norton/Symantec are security specialists). Brian

If you don't have any other Symantec services installed (like Norton Anti Virus), then the best way of removing it would be to download the removal tool from Symantec.

Nick: Could that drive manager be malawares?
By that I mean not the program but nasties.

There are several discussions about this on the Norton Forums .... basically Norton do not have a stand alone product referred to as Driver Manager BUT a malware site does claim to be a Norton partner and installs such a product which requires a subscription to keep it going (and presumably your system)

cnet.com has various user reviews about this driver manager, sorry to say all bad.
One reviewer is trying to get a refund on monies paid.
The recommended driver updates in some cases are 'old software drivers'.
The link I found was for customer support - removals- updates and key probs, all give as a broken link.
 Not something I would use/recommend >:(

My thanks to everyone.
It does appear that my fears about Driver Manager have been confirmed and that it is neither a Microsoft or Norton - Symantec product.
Won't go about the hopeless task of trying to recover my money (Scottish though I am).
Will endeavor to uninstall product conventionally and block any further communication from them.
Wish me luck!!!

Hi there,
It appears I have successfully uninstalled Driver Manager from my computer using their own programme. We shall see!
Its operation was a bit quirky and made me suspicious of the product.
My thanks again, hope I did the right thing.

I suppose it depends on where you get it from.   It's always advisable to download programs from the people who write it.  Even 'trusted' sites can be dodgy these days.  I'm not sure why you would need a driver manager - Windows seems to do a good job managing its own ?

(Sorry for the tardy reply)

Hi Nick29,
Thank you for pointing out why we don't really need a driver manager.
Have already uninstalled as reported and feel more comfortable to let Windows do the job.
