Title: Medical Staff Corps
Post by: Stiobhán on Monday 24 December 12 20:09 GMT (UK)
Did members of this Corps belong to particular regiments or did they move around? I'm searching for any information on my Great Grandfather, John Christopher McDonald born c.1851 (in Liverpool, Lancashire according to 1891/1901/1911 censuses). He was a corporal (so must have been in for a few years) in the Medical Staff Corps and based in Fort Pitt, Chatham in July 1886 (when he married), the Longford Barracks in May 1888 (when a child was baptised) and the Arbour Hill Barracks, Dublin in October 1890 (another baptism). He had left the service by the 1891 census and is listed as a Commissionaire. I want to find out who he was stationed with in these places and why there. Any help, ideas or information would be much appreciated. Thank you

A sideways answer - if he was a Commissionaire, he may well have belonged to the Corps of Commissionaires, and there just might be something about him in their archives:

A more straightforward answer - you might get help from http://www.ams-museum.org.uk/museum/

There is plenty of advice on tracing soldiers in general on the National Archives website.
