I would appreciate help in finding details of the marriage between Edward Mair (Mear) to Ann Clarke
before the birth of their first child Elizabeth in 1828. By 1840 their fifth child was born in Chittlehampton, North Devon.
Thank you.

20 Aug 1826 Chittlehampton,Devon

John Clark Mair 27 Jan 1833 Chittlehampholt parish Warkleigh to Edward and Anne fathers occupation-mason
Mary Mair 2 Feb 1835 all same details as above
Elizabeth Maire 1 Aug 1827 same as before

William Maire 16 Jan 1831

Thank you so much for this information.
In the 1841 Census the five children were Elizabeth, William, Mary, Walter and Thomas.
So presumably both John and John Clark must have died as young children, for although John would have been old enough to have left home by then it's unlikely they would have had named two children John.

John Mare aged 1 of Chittenholt was buried in Chittlehampton on 21st Aug 1834.
-
Also a John Mare aged 8 mths of the same place buried there on 6th Jan 1830.

Thank you for replying so soon.
I can see that the John Mair who was buried on 21 August 1834 was probably John Clarke Mair.
But is there a third child John Mair (Mare) (Maire) or (Mear) burial in Warkleigh, North Devon between 1824 and 1833, whose age at death relates to a birth in 1824?

no more details available.
If they didn't marry till 1826 then are you sure he was a born a Mair/e?
Can't see a burial that fits of one born 1824 ish.

The only baptism I can see that was on 24th May in Warkleigh Chittlehampton was in 1829
John Maire son of Edward ( a mason) and Anne.
And I think the death that I found earlier is him.
Also a John Mare aged 8 mths of the same place buried there on 6th Jan 1830.

That all makes sense. Thank you so much for resolving this.
The name John has continued through all subsequent generations of the Mair family, so I guess it's likely there was a John in the generation before Edward and Ann.
-
Perhaps Edward's dad was called John?
There's a burial in Chittlehampton of a 52 year old John Mair on 18th Feb 1821 ie born 1769.

That's amazing. Thank you so much for your help.
I'll start a new thread in the New Year.
Happy Christmas.
