Title: Who is John Oxton 1857
Post by: Scouse on Friday 21 December 12 13:39 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone.

John Benet Smith my GGGrandfather made a will in 1857 , in it  he has as an executor one, John Oxton of Higher Bebington, Publican & Flour dealer. Does anybody have any info about John Oxton, I'm just curious to know who he really was,

Kind regards  Scouse

Hi Scouse,

I have no knowledge of that area and therefore cannot answer you question. On conducting an online search there does appear to be a George Hotel in Bebington but it may not be the one you are looking for.

Regards

JJ

Hi Allan.

Thank you very much for the link, followed your instructions and found John Oxton matching your research, really good site, I'm going to try and find my GGGrandfathers death on there, obviously I have already got most of the info, even down to his cemetery plot number, but just curious as to what info is available on this sight.

Kind regards  Scouse.

Hi,

The site that Allan posted contains transcriptions taken from the original parish register and BT's for the parishes listed, from the earliest available up to 1871.  It's a great source of information although the format can appear a little cumbersome.

Hi, my family are from Higher Bebington, and the original pub was knocked down and what stands today as a building, is now empty, having recently closed. The pub is currently up for sale. There are some books about Higher Bebington, which I will take a look at and get back to you, hopefully with some more info re John Oxton.

The John Oxton you are inquiring about is my 4th great-uncle. He initially worked as a Publican for an Inn Keeper in the early 1800’s in Higher Bebington, and later (approximately 1835-1840) became owner of The George Hotel which, at the time, was located on Village Road in Higher Bebington, Cheshire, England.

Hi JAmee, sorry for the delay in replying, John Oxton Publican And Flour dealer was The executor of my GGGgrandads will, the will was read in 1857. The deceased being John Smith of Higher Bebington, basically that was all I had.
