Hey all. This is the beginning of my exploration into my scottish side. My 2x Great grandfather was married in Australia in 1858. On his marrige cert he put his place of birth as Dundee, Ayreshire. Now my understanding is that Dundee and Ayreshire are on opposite sides of Scotland. I now have his death cert and it states the same thing. Could there be a Dundee in Ayreshire? Was this normal, was it confused often or is there an explaination to the confusion.
Robert Calder, born abt 1819. Father William Calder, (Innkeeper), (from Roberts death cert) and Ellen Harper.
I haven't found his birth or their marrige in my preliminary searches, but as I said I am new to Scottish records.
thx

Unfortunately Scottish Civil registration did not start until much later (1855) and the Parish records are very fragmented where they exist at all and unfortunately my experience of Ayrshire Church records shows that they were very poor.
As to Dundee and Ayrshire - they are certainly not in the same area and I've never known them confused - could it possibly be Dundonald in Ayrshire ?

Hi
The 1841 Scottish census unfortunately is limited in detail, it doesn't show relationships nor actual birthplaces. There is this family that looks interesting
Village of Carnoustie, Civil Parish Barry,Angus
William Calder 50 b Angus occupation Horn (sic)
Helan (sic) Calder 52 b Scotland Occ Horn (sic)
Robert Calder 19 b Scotland Linen H.L.W. (Hand loom weaver?)
Helan (sic) Calder 17 b Scotland Linen h.l.w.
Alexander Calder 15 b Scotland Linen H.L.W.
Born Scotland means they were born in Scotland but not the county of Angus
Carnoustie is about 10 miles from Dundee and it is not uncommon for people, when a long way from home, to give a nearby large town as birthplace.
In Scotland Helen and Ellen are interchangeable.

Hey Andy thx for that. That looks pretty close. The names look familiar too. There is an Alexander here in Australia as well. Same town. Wonder if his brother migrated as well?
Thx again

Could this be the act named Mumford Dundee who were appearing in North Ayrshire rather than a place name ?
