Have you tried writing a letter to the Manchester Evening News - they have a section once a week for people wanting to get back intouch.

Thank you for your note, we have tried all other venues without success, John walked away from his family some years ago
and no one has been able to find him. Someone out there must know him so I thought I would give it a try, forgive me.
