Hi
Hoping someone can help me with a stumbling block. I am trying to confirm a maiden name for Elizabeth Dodson who married Charles Dodson on I think 03/04/1825 (Online Records I have found say in Hampton [Wick, I think]). This marriage date from the IGI shows her as Elizabeth Dodge. But I am trying to confirm that marriage with other info.
All of their 7 children were born before 1837 so no birth certs available. But I have established from the IGI that 5 were christened at St Nicholas, Thames Ditton and 2 at All Saints in Kingston. Unfortunately none of the online records give a mothers maiden name.
I believe that Charles Dodson died in 1839 and Elizabeth remarried 26/10/1844 at All Saints in Kingston to a Henry Hurst.
So I am hoping that someone can find her maiden name from:
A: Any extra info from her original Marriage to Charles Dodson
B: One of the Baptisms
C: Her 2nd Marriage to Henry Hurst.
Here's hoping and thanks in advance

Hi
Surrey Marriage index has the marriage as Charles Dodson and Elizabeth Dodge as well
-
Hi Groom
Thanks for the quick work. Does that index show her 2nd marriage as formerly Dodge or something like that?
That would do it for me.

Groom, Thanks very much for your info and time.
I now have some extra info that was missing before and that takes me forward, which is always a good thing. :)
I am possibly looking for the icing on the cake but .... Is the 2nd marriage in the indicies where you found the details of the 1st marriage?
Do you know if the information in the parish records would include a birth surname for a 2nd marriage? If so i could try and get to Woking to view the records there.
Thanks again

Hi
Unfortunately I cant see the second marriage on the CD that I have. Unless you live very close to Woking it might be easier and cheaper to send for the Hurst/Dodson marriage certificate from the GRO. The certificates that I have from second marriages have always given both names, in this case hopefully it would say Dodson formerly Dodge.

Have you seen this from 1841?
Thames Ditton
Elizabeth Dodson 30 Not born in county
Charles Dodson 15 Surrey
William Dodson 13 Surrey
Sarah Dodson 11 Surrey
Henry Dodson 7 Surrey
Fredrick Dodson 4 Surrey
Henry Hurst 30 Bricklayer Surrey
-
Hi, Yes thanks Jan
In my mind Henry and Charles were working on the same building (Site) as they were both bricklayers and after Charles death in 1839, Henry took to looking after Elizabeth and Charles' children. Until at least Elizabeth became pregnant with Henry's 1st child, George, and they married a couple of years after George's birth. They also had another 3 children, the last appears to have been when Elizabeth was about 45!
Of course it may not have been like that at all!
Thanks again

Can I just throw another spanner in the works?
There is a tree on Ancestry that has this family, complete with the marriage of Elizabeth Dodson to Henry Hurst. However they have the first marriage as
Charles Dodson born 1795 Godstone to Elizabeth Taylor on 15th March 1815 in Godstone. However as Elizabeth doesn't give Godstone as her POB on censuses I'm not sure this is correct. I think the one we have found for a Dodson/Dodge marriage is more likely.
I think the only way you are going to know for certain is to get Henry and Elizabeth's marriage certificate.

Hi Jan
I had not seen that tree on Ancestry but had seen similar info elsewhere. One of the reasons for trying to verify the info i have.
Being a retired engineer i like spanners, so no problem. All my info currently points at Dodge rather than Taylor. One of the things i need to check when i can get to the library is a ref in Ancestry (Found on a search, but i do not have a subscription) is for Frederick Dodson's baptism. From other sources (FreeReg) I have these dates - Born 21/06/1837 and Baptised 16/07/1837. But that record shows Frederick Dodson as dad and just Elizabeth as Mum. The scant info you get on the free search seems to fit but of course you cannott see the detail behind.
The new year will see a visit to the library I think.
Merry Xmas to all and thanks for your assistance

I'm afraid that wont be of much help, it is a Bishop's Transcript and gives the parents as Charles and Elizabeth Dodson. She seems to be determined to keep her maiden name a secret.
Other children also baptised William 14/9/1828. Sarah 4/4/1830, George 11/3/1832, Henry 4/5/1834 and Walter 23/12/1835 - again parents just given as Charles and Elizabeth Dodson.
Happy Christmas
