Hi, I’m new to this county!
I am looking for anything about Samuel Goodwin, who I believe was at Fernilee from at least 1818 (on his brother John's marrage bond) and at 'The White Hall' in 1824 (on his brother's Will). I have found a baptism in Taxal for a Samuel Goodwin, son of Samuel Goodwin and Martha, of Whitehall, Hope parish on the 24th Jan 1819.
I don’t have anything else about Samuel Goodwin (Sr), his brother John (my ancestor) was born about 1777 (just to give an idea of age).
So two things, firstly can anyone tell me anything more about Whitehall? It is halfway between Fernilee and Buxton as far as I can tell, but apart from that I don't know much.
Secondly can anyone trace Samuel before or after this? His brother John and his family were on the Cheshire/Staffordshire border in Wincle, not at all far away, so I’m trying to work out where they were born.
Thanks,

Whitehall is about three quarters the way up "Long Hill" - the road which runs between Whaley Bridge and Buxton - on the Eastern side of the road. It has been used, for as long as I remember, as an outdoor pursuits centre so, if you'd care to contact them, I suspect they'd be happy for you to visit the place.

Hi
his brother John (my ancestor) was born about 1777
Is that correct as he would have been 41 if he married in 1818?
If Samuel was b 1819 - that was 42 yrs after John's birth so Martha would be too old to be his mother
Samuel born 1819 would have been born after John's marriage so could not have been a witness

Just a thought. Is the Whitehall on Long Hill in the "Hope Parish" or is there another "Whitehall"?
The one on Long Hill is quite some way from Hope and, I would have thought more likely to have been connected to Buxton or Chapel-en-le-Frith.

Sorry for the confusion! Samuel, brother of John, was married to Martha and had a son called Samuel.
But those births look very encouraging!
I have modified my original post to attempt to make it clearer.

According to GENUKI ( http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DBY/Fernilee/index.html ) Fernilee was in Hope parish, which isn't far from White Hall.

That's fine, apart from Fernilee having little (if any) other logical connection with Hope nowadays. It's interesting to note that Chapel-en-le-Frith, which is considerably closer to Hope, ceased to be in the Hope parish as long ago as 1297.
I doubt that I'll ever fully understand religious matters!

Neither will I!
As an update I've looked at the abode on the baptisms of all of Samuel's (Sr) children, and his first two children were not born at Whitehall, John (1815, Normanwood) and William (1817, Taxal). I'm not sure if Normanwood is in Derbyshire or Cheshire, but it's just to the west of Fernilee

Being to the West of the river, I suspect that "Normanwood" was originally in Cheshire but, today, its clearly in Derbyshire.
Incidentally, Whitehall is owned by Derbyshire County Council and became an outdoor pursuits centre in 1951.

Buxton: The area south of the Wye (Upper Buxton and the Market Place) was in the ecclesiastical parish of Bakewell, and north of the Wye was in the parish of Hope.
Hope this helps
