John Henry Bell was born about 1900 in Seaton Delavel, Northumberland.
He was an illegitimate son of Sarah (Sallie) Bell.
I understand that he was always known as Henna.
In the 1911 census he is living at 99 Foreman's Row, Seaton Delavel, Northumberland with his grandmother, Margaret Bell who was a widow, aged 75 years.
I have been told that John Henry (Henna) Bell died in a mining accident, and wondered how I could find out when, where and how he died.

Durham mining museum site has the records for deaths ,what year do you suspect he died

Hi
I deleted my previous message as it didn't add anything and might have been misleading. (Didn't realised John Henry Bell was such a common name)
However by way of something positive here is a link to the Durham Mining Museum website that Radcliff mentioned

hl,
Seeing what little info you have and the spread of the Bell surname. I think it will be difficult to find answers for your questions.....
So John Henry Bell was 10 yr old and living at 99 Foreman's Row on the 1911 census. ( His mother and family were also at 99 Foreman's Row on the 1901 census)
The shaft of Seaton Delaval Colliery was about 200 yards along a handy footpath from the east of Foreman's Row.
John Henry or Henna ( Many miners called Henry got nicknamed " Henna" or "Hennie") could have started down Seaton Delaval pit a few years after the taking of the 1911. And he could have been a pit fatality anytime from then up to anytime around, say, his 60th birthday ( circa 1960).
Or he could have moved away from the Seaton Delaval area anytime after 1911, and started down a pit a long way off or just nearby !
(The DMM website shows that more than 90 pits were within a 5 mile radius of Seaton Delaval pit)
The DMM site shows 3 Bell fatalities in SD pit but none of them are compatable with his birthyear/age at death figures.
Additionally the registration of his death should be recorded on the FreeBMD site, but it could be registered as simply John Bell, rather than his full John Henry Bell !
Nor can I see a definitive registration of a marriage for him. ?
Do you have any further info on him ?

This link shows map including Foremans Row in the proximity of the SD pit yard.( Foremans Row was supposedly the longest single pit row in Northumberland )

Henna was my husband's uncle. GEORGE Harold R Bell was Henna's brother. Henna died in an accident at the Seaton elaval mine 1934/35 and is buried at the Seghill church. his brother Harold helped to carry him out of the mine.

Gillian,
Michael has switched back to Newcastle.
If this man died in a pit accident in Seaton Delaval, his death would have been registered within the main Registration District of Tynemouth ( whose office was situated at North Shields). Sub-districts of Tynemouth included Blyth which covered Seaton Delaval.
On 1 Oct 1936 name of reg district was changed to Northumberland South ( but head office office still at North Shields) until 1 April 1974, when it became North Tyneside, part of Tyne & Wear.
To enlist in WW1 men had to be 18 yrs. But could not be posted abroad until 19 yrs.
However it is supposed that 250,000 under 19s fought abroad. 18000 "boys" died in the Battle of the Somme !

Thank you Michael,
I thought I was correct in my assumption that if he died in Seaton ,his death would have been registered Tynemouth,I just wanted you to clarify that for me as I do find the registration district changes difficult to keep in my head,
And glad to hear you are back in Northumberland for Christmas,
Gillian

I'm sure my husband would like to see a photo of the gravestone.
John Henry Bell would have been my husband's 1st cousin, twice removed.
John Henry Bell's mother was Sarah (Sally) Bell, and her brother, Henry Bell, was my husband's great-grandfather.
-
Which would make your husband's great grandfather my husbands great great uncle, I think. We have a photo of Henna's brother my husbands father, we are told they looked very much alike. My husband started his career at the same pit as Henna, and my husband's father worked and lost his leg in the same pit. E-mail me and I'll send you what I have. We have information on Henna's wife Nancy, and daughter. Nancy is buried with her father at Seghill.
