Hi, I was wondering if anybody could please help me with my Cumberland surname interests at all. I have the Kennedys in Stapleton, the Bells in Longtown, the Ewarts in Bewcastle and the Forsters in (I think) in Lanercost Abbey. The ancestor I have got furthest back with on the Forster side put himself down on one census as being born in Lanercost Abbey and another as being born in Bewcastle but I have already checked out the Bewcastle register and his name is definitely not down on them so I can only guess he was born in Lanercost Abbey. I would be very grateful for any help anyone can give me.
Thanks

What names, dates and location do you currently have?

Hi all my Kennedy ancestors are from Stapleton, I have checked out some Stapleton parish records transcribed on the internet which go back as far as about 1813 which take me as far back to the deaths of David Kennedy (born 1742 in Stapleton) and his wife Ann Kennedy nee Gillesby (born 1750 I don't know where). I do also know the name of David's father, a John Kennedy as my dad searched the Stapleton parish records years ago with the vicar but he was only searching for direct Kennedy ancestors at the time and I am now interested in finding out about all of my Kennedy ancestors including siblings of David and his son Richard born about 1792.
The furthest I have got back with my Bell's is a William Bell born about 1816 in Longtown. The furthest I have got back with my Ewarts is a Margaret Ewart born 1808 in Bewcastle, her parents were a Robert Ewart and Ann Ewart nee Nixon. The furthest I have got back with my Forster's is a Nicholas Forster who was born 1796/1797 in (I think) Abbey Lanercost. I have explored all the Cumberland censuses and would be very grateful for any information you could give me regarding siblings of the above or/and any further generations back.

Thanks so much for all the info, that's brilliant, I now have one further generation back on the Ewart's and the Nixon's. I have also written to another person who is descended from Ewart's so I'll let you know if anything new turns up from that.

Hi Keena,
Does Peter Forster son of John Forster and Ann Blaylock mean anything to you.Peter married Jane Crosbie 16/08/1834 at Stapleton.
-
No, I'm very sorry it doesn't, my 3x great grandmother was a Mary Forster whose father was the Nicholas Forster I mentioned above, they could be related somewhere but I'm not really sure as yet.
Thanks again

Hi Kena
Just came across this posting today re David KENNEDY et al...
Have a look at http://www.rootsweb.com/~rutledge/DodgsonManuscript.htm which mentions him and son Archibald. I only came across this earlier today in my quest for the Kennedy's of Bewcastle /Stapleton area and lo & behold! - as David Kennedy is on my Tree too - indirectly at present! ;D
Hope it helps - HiFly

Hi, I have seen this message before as well, it was really interesting to read though. How are you related to David Kennedy?, I have information about David's parents and siblings that I found out about when I had a research request done for me at Carlisle Record Office if you are interested but unfortunately I haven't got any information on David and Ann's other children as yet.
Thanks

Hello,
I have a connection with the Kennedy family of Stapleton but I fear that not all my information in correct. I had been told that my ancestor, Simon Kennedy, 1805, was the son of John Kennedy 1763 and Elizabeth Forster, 1764. I thought that Simon had two brothers, Richard 1793 and Thomas, 1803. Simon lived in Longrigg with his wife Mary (nee Armstrong). The pair had seven children, including my gr. grandfather John, born 1843.
Now I am really confused, which Kennedys are mine, I am not sure now.
Can anyone help, please? ???

Hi, my Kennedy ancestors going back are a Richard Kennedy born 1792 in Stapleton, his parents were David Kennedy born 1742 and Ann Gillespie born 1750 and as far as I know ( according to a research request I had done) David's parents were a John and Dorothy Kennedy of Masthorn born about 1690 and about 1698 so they just may be different Kennedy's but still related somewhere along the line. An interesting fact is that my Richard Kennedy and his wife Mary were living at Longrigg as well at the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses so that might be a sign they're related somewhere along the way as well
Good Luck with your research!

Re your confusion - No authority on this - but my database of the Kennedy's of Stapleton has "your Richards birthdate down as 1807 and married to a Mary Underwood. Everything else you quoted tallies with my data including your GGF John...... :D and I don't see any connection of this Kennedy group to kena's lot (as yet)....
I must admit that until I set up my database - on the advice of some long-standing members - I was also getting confused with similar names etc. etc.
Happy hunting....HiFly
