Hello, I am seeking any information or descendency from the Rev William McRae/McCrae prolly born 1844 Edinburgh, Scotland.
1872 William McRae a Ross-shire divinity student visited Waipu. At a Presbytery meeting in Auckland on 7 February 1872, the Rev. Mr. Bruce introduced Mr. McRae, who meantime settled in Waipu.
1872 The Rev. Wm. McRae was duly installed in the May as Minister at Waipu, and remained there until June 1883, when he resigned and left for Australia.
1875 William McCrae married at Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church, Auckland, NZ to Catherine Finlayson eldest dau of Mr R Finlayson, settler, Waipu.
1897 Christchurch, New Zealand paper reports: Friday 14 May 1897 Rev. W. McRae, was drowned at Sydney - well known at Waipu and Auckland - native of Scotland, came to NZ 25 years ago - has a daughter living in Waipu and a sister at New Plymouth. he was a widow.
I should love to learn:
❆Who is that dau living in Waipu
[edit: prolly dau Clara Eleanor McCrae b1877]
❆What happened to Catherine Finlayson - I believe she died about 1884, yet can find no Death Record.
[edit: since found Catherine died 1880 Waipu aged 25]
Any ideas please.
Thanks,

Have you contacted Waipu Museum
or Presbyterian archives
MACRAE, Rev William
b. (?)
A good Gaelic scholar who was brought to NZ by Rev David Bruce, as Probationer of the
Church of Scotland.
Ordained Waipu NP 29.5.1872; a manse was built for him. He found it difficult to follow the
Rev Norman McLeod, and resigned 19.6.1883. He returned to Scotland and was inducted
to a charge under the Church of Scotland. Later he came back to New Zealand and preached
to the dissatisfied in a local hall at Waipu for a time.
He was drowned in Sydney Harbour on his way back to Scotland.
Died (?)

Hi Muss
Have just recently added to "anykey's Australian thread, another account of the wedding, wherein the surname of Clara Eleanor, is spelled as "MACRAE".
Both these 1906 reports of course confirm that Clara Eleanor was the only daughter of the late Rev. W. MACRAE (McRAE / McCRAE) (and a grand-daughter of R. FINLAYSON).
