I am trying to trace John Sims who the 1861 census shows as having been born in Riddings, Derbyshire in 1817 but find that the village church was only built in 1832. Does anyone know where there may be records of baptism etc held. I have not been able to trace census records before 1861 when he was living in West Bromwich but I do know from his marriage certificate that his father was also named John and was an excavator. .

Can you give 61 details please.Did you mean he was in West Bromich in 61 or on earlier census?

Here's the family in 1851:
HO107/2025/342/26
Duke St, West Bromwich
John SIMS Head 32 Coal Miner b. West Bromwich
Mary SIMS Wife 26 b. Wednesbury
Eliza SIMS Dau 7 Scholar b. West Bromwich
Robert SIMS Son 5 Scholar b. West Bromwich
[Unnamed] SIMS Son 1 week b. West Bromwich
Although John gives his place of birth in 1851 as West Bromwich, this seems to match the family in 1861:
RG9/2026/34/25
Duke St, West Bromwich
John SIMS Head 41 Coal Miner b. Rhyddings, Derbyshire
Mary SIMS Wife 39 b. Wednesbury
Eliza SIMS Dau 15 b. Wednesbury
Robert SIMS Son 14 Mill Furnace Man b. Wednesbury
Joseph SIMS Son 10 Forgeman b. Wednesbury
Hannah SIMS Dau 8 b. Wednesbury
Thomas SIMS Son 5 b. Wednesbury
Mary SIMS Dau 2 b. Wednesbury
William SIMS Son 11 months b. Wednesbury

Riddings ecclesiastical parish was formed in 1851 from the parish of Alfreton. The church was a former Chapel of Ease.

Thank you all very much. This does seem to be "my" John. He continues to use West Bromwich as place of birth on census' up to 1881 when he reverts to Derbyshire and I think I have traced one of the witnesses at his wedding (Robert Nelson) as being born in Alfreton

hi re john sims he is my great grandfatheri have quite a lot of informationwhich may help i have his birth certificate and death certificate so if i can help with any thing further please let me know
-
John Sims is my 2 x great grandfather through his son Robert (1846- 1923). I have his marriage certificate for 5 Feb 1844 in West Bromwich showing wife Mary Ann Wright, father as John and his age as 27. I also have his death certificate 28 Dec 1883 and a copy of his will listing all his children but have had trouble tracing his birth and where he was prior to marriage so his birth details would be marvellous. I was hoping to "flesh out" the family - his granddaughter, my grandmother, never spoke of her family.

hi sorry about building your hopes up it was my first posting i meant to sayi have his marriage and death certificate but not birth certificate but i have allhis families censuses 1851 to 1911 it was his birth details i also require can only apologise again for the mistake

Never mind, we will get there. The will shows his daughters' married names and their husbands, would those be of any use to you?
-
yes we would be interested in the information it would help to confirm the data we have
-
The will is dated 29 October 1883 when he was living at 63 King St. Wife is Mary and sons Robert, Joseph,Thomas,William, Edward and Samuel.
Eliza is wife of Isaac Garland, miner,
Mary Ann is wife of Zachariah Homer, forgeman.
Hannah is recorded as wife of Joseph Williams, forgeman. However I haven't been able to trace a marriage for Williams. There is one for a Joseph Williamson and Hannah Simms in 1873 and the 1881 census has the Williams family at 3 Fordrough and in 1891 the Williamson family at 3 Fordrough - I suppose it will take a certificate to decide which is correct. (the marriage in 1915 of Hannah Sims and Joseph Williams is that of Robert Sims daughter).
The will does not mention Ann who is on the 1871 census. (That is the only reference to her I have found so far)
John's signature was witnessed by Theophilus Shaw Batchford a pattern maker of Temple St and Joseph Westwood, roller, of Overend St. The executor was Reuben Shaw Batchford.
Hope this is of use but let me know if there is anything else.

I've been looking at certificates again this morning and found that when Robert Sims married Louisa Jones (6.8.1878) one of the witnesses was Hannah Williamson - looks as though that might solve the Williams/Williamson question if it was his sister.
The Samuel Simms I have traced married a Sarah Jane - am I on the right track? There seems to be no standard spelling of Sims in the family which doesn't help does it.
-
yes samuel simms married sarah jane parker born 1887 died 1928 age 61 samuel died june 1930 age 65 our father told us somewhere along the line a mistake was made in the spelling from sims to simms it then carried on as simms i have got roberts details his wife louise died march 1893 age 37 ? from free b m d 6b 534 if its the right one ? thanks again
-
Yes, Louisa died 28 March 1893 from influenza while in premature labour - she was 5 months pregnant. I have been told she was buried in a paupers grave in Heath Lane cemetery but the family were kind enough to put her name on the large family gravestone when her father died 9 months later!
Hope it's been of help.
