Title: Cornelius and Ellen Cain
Post by: C Green on Thursday 06 December 12 01:42 GMT (UK)
Another Irish mystery - Can anyone find Cornelius Cain, born in Ireland, early 1800s. Lived in Malone, NY, USA: DOB on census recs 1850-1880 vary from born 1816 to 1833, I suspect it's abt 1823. Married Ellen,  her DOB: 1824-1830. Mult kids b. in US Catherine, Zebia, Ellen, Mary, Walter, Marcus Cain between 1854-1856). In 1850, Michael Kaine (b. 1810) and Patrick Kain (b. 1810) also had families in neighborhood. I know this is VERY little to go on...

You are probably going to need a bit more detail before starting a search for any Irish details for Cornelius. A more specific location  is usually essential before searching for such early records - i.e. the name of the town or parish your Cain family lived in. If possible also some family details e.g. details for parents or some siblings.

Do you have a death certs for Cornelius and Ellen ?

You didn't mention Ellen's maiden name... did they marry in the US ?

see : Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html)
My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start? (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,498742.0.html)

p.s. you should probably consider alternate spellings for the surname like Keane and Kane etc.

Maybe start with searching for birth certs for one or more of the children ?

A cert should usually give you Ellen's maiden name, which you need to start a search for a marriage. Also might be worth searching for immigration records for Cornelius and Ellen - although early records of this are often very basic.

Were all their children born in the US, or were any born in Ireland ?

Definitely worth checking for death certs for both Cornelius and Ellen - US versions of these often give names of parents...

Resources in the U.S. are definitely the way to find any clues to a place in Ireland, etc.

Most U.S. states will list names of parents on their birth, marriage and death certificates. Some states also list birthplaces of parents on these certificates. Although it may just say 'Ireland' there's always the chance a more exact location will have been listed so you need to check ALL certificates for the parents and their children.
Also look for obituaries and they might mention place of origin, arrival in U.S., etc.
