Can anyone help me solve a longstanding problem please?
My husband's family are remarkably ignorant about their people! Any info that I have for certain here is gained from records (eg BMD)
I'm looking for an Evelyn Coles ( middle initial 'C' on the death GRO)- maiden name unknown (and v important to me to know it!) born 1881-3 who married a William Henry Coles (taken from daughter Edith's marriage cert), maybe in Croydon - almost certainly in SE England. They had daughters Edith b 1911-13 and Florence b abt 1915-16 and another girl unknown name, who died as a child. William died before 1939. Evelyn died 1963 aged 82. The family spent time in India and China - but this seems to have been later than when their children were being born, maybe late twenties, early thirties. I don't know where either of them was born but guess Croydon or within the Greater London region. The only joy I've had with the census lists a guy with ooccupation 'tram driver' but this also doesn't seem right...... this man is more likely to have been a professional of some sort.
I just can't seem to find a record that coincides with this couple or their children - there are many that seem almost right, but not right enough. Reportedly William was a nasty man - violent, drunk - perhaps there are records of him elsewhere, then......
If I'm wrong and their children were born in India or China, none of those records I've seen seem to fit either. I know that the girls attended a convent school in Bombay and wonder if anyone knows where this was - there can't have been many.
Sorry to make such an itsy-bitsy sort of request but I'm really stuck.
Thanks in advance to anyone who will try to help. :)

I can't see a baptism for an Edith. The parents names are correct but the dates are earlier than given and you didn't mention a son.

A William H Coles travelled from Bombay arriving in London on board the Nagoya on 17th May 1919. His permanent place of residence was India. He seems to be travelling alone.
-
Also A William M Coles b c1878 travelling from Hong Kong to London in 1929 - permanent address in Portsmouth. He's a chargeman of electrical fitters.
I did wonder if the M was a msitranscription, but the image has a typewritten M

Both of those addresses are in good residential parts of Croydon, so the family must have been quite well off.

If you are able to look at Ancestry there is 1 public tree which shows that William Henry Coles b.23/7/1877 Paddington, London, son of William Samuel Tilke Coles and Eleanor Clifford Thomas who married 25/12/1872 St. Leonard, Shoreditch, London. Eleanor died 1887 and WSTC remarried a Lucy Elizabeth Hurd Carnell in 1896 and he died in Sheffield in 1918. He was an Engineer (although only a metal turner in 1881).
William Samuel Tilke Coles b.1851 Ottery St. Mary, Devon - son of a William Coles, Blacksmith (per marriage certificate on Ancestry).
1851 Census: Ottery St. Mary (ref.HO107 - 1864 - 160 - 25)
William Coles 33 Blacksmith b. Ottery St. Mary, Devon
Mary Coles 33 b. Zeal Monachorum(??) , Devon
Fanny Coles 2 b. Ottery St. Mary
Babe Coles 4 days ditto
George Henry Poke 17
Mary Carnall 60 Nurse
Think something must have happened between 1851 and 1861 as can't find family in 1861 but Fanny (above) 12 is with grandmother Elizabeth Coles as is a James aged 8. Think the 'Babe' in 1851 is William ST.
This should now have you on the right path.
