Hi jemstone
Not sure how a record office may be able to help here, Jemstone :-\
As you will be aware, this is before the start of official registration in Scotland from 1855. This marriage entry that you have found is from the Old Parish Registers. OPR entries, in the main, contain minimal info and vary parish by parish. You don't know what information will be included until you look at the image.
The original images are available to view on the pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Have you checked this yet?
There may be something in their children's names that can provide you with clues to grandparents' names www.rootschat.com/links/0sgq/
Sometimes checking a number of christening entries can also give you further clues if family members acted as sponsors.

the other option - would it be on the death certifciate

You have the same problem though. There were no death certificates issued before the start of official registration in Scotland from 1855.
Before that you only have a possible death or burial entry in the parish registers (these registers are particularly scarce and patchy unfortunately).
More info here www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/Help/index.aspx?r=554&613 You can also click on the link for OPR birth/marriage/death on the right for more detailed notes.

Hi Jemstone:
As soon as I saw your posting, I thought it must be our Holm clan and it could still be.
I have traced the Holms back to the late 16th century, so I will do a bit more delving,
I do have a William Holm marrying a Margaret Williamson in 1802 in Cromarty, R&C.
Will get back to you.
Kind regards
