I am trying to identify where a family lived in Bristol at various dates. I am finding it difficult becsue so much of central Bristol has been demolished and redeveloped. I would like to trace on at least the 1902 maps. Hoping to find someone a bit more knowledgeable than me.
1) "Gillams Court" later "Gilhams COurt", St James. - 1841 and 1851 census. Within St Mary Redcliffe area. In census listed between West Street and Little James Street. Internet sources confirm a poor area hit by 1849 cholera epidemic.
2) Union PLace, St Philips. 1859, 1860. I have found a reference to a Union Place off Picton Lane but this does not look in right area.
3) Wellington COurt. 1861 census. There is a Wellington Court today - a modern block off Ashley Road. But not sure if this is built in same place.
4) Cross Street, St Pauls. 1871 Actually this one is probably Ok. In Census by Penn Street which still exists so know area to look in on old map. Will leave it here for completeness
5) Water Street, St Pauls. 1881 and 1886. Census near Callowhill Street and Leak Lane. Found reference to Sugarloaf pub in Water Street.
Any help in locating these near present day street so can search old map gratefully received.

You need to try the "Know Your Place" pages on the Bristil City Council website:
http://maps.bristol.gov.uk/knowyourplace/?maptype=js
Click on "addresses" on the left-hand side, and select the 1900 map from the RHS.

Good evening,
Here are water street and cross street, if the link works. http://maps.bristol.gov.uk/knowyourplace/?maptype=js

Back again,
No it didn't, but follow previous hints, blow up to about 75%. St Pauls is roughly central from the words "St Pauls" head soth until you see Milk st, very wide, keep going down and you will find first Water st then Cross st below it. Both heading roughly east west.

Thanks for this. Brilliant link. Wish I had known it existed before.
Much easier to look at these maps on computer than set of hard copy 1902 maps I purchased.

Good evening,
How is your search going, just as an aide, Water st and Cross st are under what is now a shopping centre. If you select 2012, find broadmead and blow up to about 75 %. Position map so you can just see temple way on right and broadmead central. Running down the left of it is union st, a possible location for union place. On the right of broadmead is a double triangle of buildings.
Now just click on the different map dates and that location will appear in its different forms.
Water st runs through the centre of the triangles and Cross st just below them, or should I say they did run there as they no longer exist.
The other locations I can't find as yet, hope this is not too long winded.

Hi, I just stumbled on your thread and then on what might be an answer (rather belatedly - sorry!) to one of your questions (lizb).
There are references to a "Gillards Court" just off Thomas Street in the Redcliffe area, on the Ashmead town plans of Bristol - see

I've purchased the birth cert and the place of birth was Water St, Bristol. I then realised I already had that address from the baptism in Nov 1840.....
At least the birth cert confirms father Thomas as deceased (as the baptism record didn't)
I've trawled through the 1841 for Water St but the family aren't there.

What family are you looking for? Who was the mother on the birth certificate?

Oh I'm so sorry! I've posted my reply on the wrong thread! I was reading this thread due to my interest in Water St.
Apologies again!
