Title: Abraham Phillips from Glendermott nr Carn

Hi, I am researching my great great grandfather Abraham Phillips born circa 1823. From an army record he served in the 85th Regt and on his discharge it states he was born in Glendermott near Carn, Londonderry. I would like to know where Glendermott and Carn are exactly. And the best place to start my research for his parents.
I would also like to know if Lower Cumber is anywwhere near the locations mentioned.

There's a townland called Carn (meaning 'a cairn') in Clondermott Parish which is just outside the city of Londonderry.

Hi,
   The townland of Carn in Clondermott is just to the east of the city of Londonderry. The parish church of Lower Cumber is about eight miles further east along the A6 road.

Many thanks for the quick replies, and to think I was stationed at Ebrington Barracks in the 1970's in reality not far from the birthplace of my great great grandfather, but never knew it.

The 1833 Tithe Applotment Book shows a James Phillips at Drumnagore, also in Clondermott (Glendermott) parish although towards the south-western end of the parish.  His son/nephew/close relative (?)  Allan Phillips (who later held this same land) was described as a "strong Covenanter" (as was his wife Eliza Mitchell) .  Kind regards, Dave Mitchell, Cape Town, South Africa
