Hi, I'd like to find Parents of Rachel McDowell, b. Nov 10 1824 somewhere in Ireland. I have her parents' names as Francis (b. 1804) and Rachel, but nothing else. Can anyone locate Rachel and do you have any additional info on her parents?
Thanks!!! :)

There are very few resources (online or off) for such an early date and to start looking for existing records you really need a more exact location than "Ireland."
Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html) and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start? (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,498742.0.html).

I'm afraid that's all I know about her roots. She married Ellis Greenhalgh from Lancashire, England and I know all the kids, but I'm afraid I can't even find a marriage record. I can only find her on 1 US Census rec, and don't know why the family isn't showing up earlier than 1880, since kids were born in Massachusetts in 1850s.
Thanks for the info, tho, it's the first time I've attempted finding anything in Ireland.

C Green, while I can't help in any specific way with your query, I would suggest that the name McDowell is a northern name. Looking at Griffith's Valuation done around 1850 all McDowell returns are based in Northern Ireland with a strong emphasis on Tyrone. Also examining the available birth records for McDowell on www.rootsireland.ie all returns for Rachel McDowell are in the northern half of the country. None match your known birth year, however. There is one return in www.irishgenealogy.ie in Dublin in 1777.
I would be inclined to concentrate my efforts in N.Ireland initially. Have you searched immigration records?
-
Hi, thank you. Yes, I've made a half-hearted attempt at immigration records, but not knowing where she came from or what her port of entry was (or even if she was married before she came over) I havent found anything. And I'm afraid I'm not going to subscribe to paid sites since I'm a mongrel and have ancestors from all over Europe - cost would be prohibitive!! :-[ But I have fun poking around the edges when I can. At least Ireland/Scotland/England they're all in English!! (So far)
Thanks for the Northern Ireland tip.

Alice Rachel McDowell born 10th Nov 1824 Northern Ireland.
Marriage 19th October 1853 Lawrence Essex Massachuttes.
Died 29th January 1883.
The only census I can see as a possible is 1850 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania
Rachel McDowell age 28, David McDowell 30 :)

Thank you!!! Now to find her parents....

Bit puzzled by this bit- Northern Ireland only came into being in the 1920s :-\
Am also struggling to find the marriage and death records on LDS site but suspect the names might have been mistranscribed?

The marriage record - Ellis Greenhalgh was under Elles Greenhall - 19th October 1855

The marriage was already mentioned on a previous thread

A family tree entry quotes the date as 19th October 1853 ??? Perhaps from a mistranscribed ancestry record ???

Thanks, Sandra :)
That marriage record lists Rachel as born in Ireland so does the death record list her as Alice Rachel born 'Northern Ireland', I wonder.

Like you, I have tried lots of combinations of name and surname but not found a death record. I believe the "Northern Ireland" also comes from a family tree entry owned by someone in Arizona and written:
Alice Rachel McDowell - Birth 10 Nov 1824 in Northern Ireland - Death 29 Jan 1883 in Lawrence, MA
Have also come across a couple of other entries with the same death date but giving New York City - but I can't find anything under that either. ??? Not sure that is correct anyway.
Have read Alica Rachel died of Typhoid Fever and is buried Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence, MA - Lawrence which is where Ellis died so seems more likely.

Information from family trees (online or otherwise) do need to be treated with caution and information verified- which explains 'Northern Ireland', etc.
-
I'm wondering if someone took the death record off the family tree, also - I'm going to contact the tree owner and see if he'll share the source of his info. THat's probably also where 'Northern Ireland' comes from, cause it's on his tree. I'll report back....
-
Would be interesting if you are able to make contact of the tree owner and get more details but in the meantime perhaps ballydw can confirm that's where these details came from-
Alice Rachel McDowell born 10th Nov 1824 Northern Ireland.
Marriage 19th October 1853 Lawrence Essex Massachuttes.
Died 29th January 1883.

Yes, details from a Family Tree mentioning Northern Ireland as place of birth.

One of the disadvantages of the internet is how quickly mis-information can be copied...
-
I know. I've found multiple family trees listing an ancestor here in America before any settlers actually arrived. and they all just copied it from one another..... (apparently without reading any history books!! ;D)
