Hello,
I am looking for Frank Ernest Simmonds. he married Hilda Howland in Elham in 1902. They had three children, Edwin John born in Elham in 1907, Herbert John born in St Giles in 1910 and Stanley George also born in St Giles in 1911.
Apart from the marriage certificate, I can't find any records for Frank. His address in 1902 was 43 Garden Road, Folkestone and he was listed as a mariner.
He is my great grandfather and I am keen to find out more about him.
Many thanks,
Mandy

There is a Hilda Howland b 1869 Eastwell shown on the 1891 census and in 1901 she is shown as b 1871 Eastwell and is a servant in Sussex
Do you have the family on the 1911 census?

There's a Frank Simmonds, a soldier in Shorncliffe Camp, Cheriton (Folkestone), on 1901 census. Born c1882 in Bow

Hi
Listed as a mariner on 1902 marriage cert
His address in 1902 was 43 Garden Road, Folkestone and he was listed as a mariner.
-
Thanks for quick replies.
Hilda was my great grandmother and was born in Hackney Union Infirmary in 1886. She was working in a hotel in Sandcliffe so the FES at Shorncliffe my be ours.
His father was given as Frank Simmonds who was also a mariner. He was 28 at the time of his marriage.
I can only find Edwin John on the1911 census, but I know that Hilda left him with relatives (her aunt) for some reason.
She married Herbert George Kelly in 1913.

I just found Hilda in the Royal Kent Hotel in Sandgate near folkestone on 1901 - that has her b Homerton, Middlesex in 1882.
-
Yes that's her.
I have a good record of her life apart from the 1911 census.
The witnesses at her marriage to Frank were Hannah Gordon, her mother, and Harriet Wood, her aunt.
She claimed to be a spinster when she married Mr Kelly in 1913 and that her father was called Herbert Simmonds who was a bath chairman. She was illegitimate and her step father was named Gordon!

I did wonder about the 1913 marriage - i guess frank may have sailed away never to be seen again?

If he really was 28 in 1902 (we've seen how truthful Hilda is!) this is a possible

Right his dad was Edward, a traveller. They're in Hackney in 1891
-
My Frank's dad was also Frank.
I've look up the address for 43 Garden Road, the address on the marriage certificate, in 1901 but there isn't a listing for it.
I can't find a death for Frank either but did find a marriage to joanna H C Botha in Medway in 1913.

Hi, I had a Frank Ernest Simmonds who was my Great grand father, All I know is he was once married to a Hilda. There is a lot of information that seems more than a coincidence. He was in England around that time. The information that has been discussed is new to me if these two Frank Simmonds are the same one then there is knowledge that was not known to me or my mothers generation. I have spoken to two of that generation The three children was not known nor was Hilda's maiden name.
Please reply to this message if this Frank Simmonds is the same and we are descendent you will be surprised where we live and it would explain why you have no records of Franks birth or death.

Thanks for your post. I have found out a lot more about Frank. He was married to my great grandmother but left her for some reason and returned to Australia. I am now trying to find out where he was between 1902 and 1916 when he returned to fight in the First World War. I have also been in touch with another grandchild who has filled in some of the gaps I suspect you are in Tasmania?
Do you know why he was in England in 1902? Really look forward to your reply.

Hi Dandolus,
I hope you pick this post up. I'd really appreciate knowing what you know about your great grandfathers time in the UK in 1902. Do you know when he returned to Australia? I suspect that he is not the father of my grandfather and his brothers so knowing where he was in 1907, 1910 and 1911 would help clarify this.
Kind regards,
Mandy

Hi Dundolus,
I'm with my Uncle and we are looking again at our evidence. If you pick this up, could you get in touch?
Kind regards,

Hi Mango,
I hope you pick this up. I came across your postings from a few years ago regarding your grandmother Hilda Howland Gordon. Her mother Hannah is my great great grandmother through her son Frederick Gordon.
My question is, do you know anything about Hannahs husband George Gordon? I have found a marriage certificate and the 1891 census but nothing before or after. 1901 Hannah is a single parent and 1911 my Grt grandad is living with an aunt in Folkestone because Hannah has died. All I know according to my grandad is that his father Frederick seemed to know nothing about his father George and it was a subject never discussed or brought up within the family.
I believe he walked out on his family and suspect he may have lied about his name which is why I can find nothing , not even a death and can't go back any further.
Are you aware of any rumour or stories about Hannah and George that could shed some light?? It would be very much appreciated!!!
