Title: Struggling with parentage for John Moore (c1793-1834)
Post by: NNR on Saturday 01 December 12 16:16 GMT (UK)
In September 1834, John Moore of Thornton was buried at Sefton Church, Lancashire. He had been a shoemaker by trade and was, apparently, aged 41 when he died. He had had two children; Thomas (b. West Derby, April 1815) and Mary (b. Fazackerley, Nov 1817). John had married Elizabeth Crookham (b. Formby, Feb 1796) at St. James, Liverpool in July 1813.

But where was John from?

Dying at 41 in 1834 gives a 1793 birth which suggests:
b. May 1793, Preston St. Liverpool to James (a labourer) and Ann Moore

but can this really be so precise? We also have...

b. Nov 1792, Walton on the Hill to Peter (a blacksmith) and Mary Moore
b. Jul 1792, (John 'Fisher' Moore) Matthew St. Liverpool to Thomas (a shipwright) and Mary Moore
b. Jul 1795 (John 'Quirk' Moore), Hackins Hey, Liverpool to John (deceased taylor) and Ann Moore

Other baptisms are in 1797 (to Richard and Mary) and back to the 1780s (1787 to Philip and Amelia, 1785 to Rev. Glover and Ann, 1784 to William and Jane and 1783 to Robert and Alice).

My question is...how do I begin to whittle these down to find the right parentage for him? I'd always assumed James and Ann (the 1793 birth) but the fact that neither of his children have their names always struck me as odd.

Thoughts please!

Hello,
Just saw your posting and wonder if we are looking for the same John Moore---if so I descend through his son Thomas.

The reason I think this is because my Thomas has his father listed on his marriage certificate as John Moore shoemaker. Thomas married Catherine Roughsedge whose father was John Roughsedge in1839 in Liverpool. After having a couple of children emigrated to Canada, living for a time in New York City (were on the 1850 census) and having 3 more children there. They ended up in Ontario  Canada by the 1861 census and had 2 more children. After Ontario they went to Manitoba with one of their sons and that is where Thomas and Catherine died.
I too am very interested to find out about this family. I have not really determined just who John's wife was but did find and consider Elizabeth Crookham  as a possibility.
If this is along the lines of what you think would love to hear from you.

Hiya I can discount one for you its not John Fisher Moore born 1792 hes a Cooper in 1814 when his daughter is christened.
However there are loads of possible John Moore s christened around 1792-1795 on Lancs opc site going to be hard to narrow it down .
Who were the witnesses in John and Elizabeths marriage?

The full details of the 1813 marriage cert are:

and ELizabeth Crookham Spinster of the Parish of Walton on the Hill
were married in this Church by Banns with Consent of [blanl] this eighteenth Day of July in the Year One thousand eight hundred and thirteen By me John Smith, B(??) Minister This Marriage was solemnized between us John Moore Elizabeth Crookham [both signed] In the Presence of Joseph Young Ellen Leatherbarrow (?) [her mark]

Unfortunately, Crackpot, these are not 'your lot'. Their son Thomas Moore married an Ellen Coulton. Thomas is buried with his father John in Sefton Churchyard.

Stephen,

If you go to the North Meols F.H.S. site, there is a member on there, "Mother", who is a descendant of John Moore and Elizabeth Crookham.

I am a descendant of Elizabeth's sister Catherine (1813).

Hi Glenys!

Thanks for that. I shall duly attempt to track 'Mother' down.

On the Crookham/Whitehead front, do you fancy sharing research? I'm temporarily blocked with Thomas Crookham's father Richard at the moment, but I've got really rather far back with the Whiteheads.

Hi,

I have a virtually identical problem. My John Moore died in 1839,aged 58.I have the death certificate and obituary from the Liverpool Mercury Newspaper (both say aged 58).He lived on Dennison Street Liverpool.
The info I have would mean he was born abt 1781, but I can't find a birth for him or a burial.Even Liverpool records office couldn't find a burial.
On his death cert a neighbor is recorded as informant and I don't know if this age can be guaranteed? I don't know if our Moore's are related but I will let you know if I find anything.I wish I could track my John Moore's parentage down but it seems impossible right now?
Appreciate any thoughts if you have any.
My Moore's seem to have stuck to the Dennison/ Leeds Street area.Any of yours from that area?
Thanks
