Title: Furlonger Marriage
Post by: irisj on Monday 26 November 12 16:29 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help me please. I have been searching for the marriage of Henry Furlonger & Elizabeth Davison. They lived in Alnwick. Henry worked at the Castle. Their son William was born on 7th July 1848. I think that he was their firstborn. I have his certificate that states his mother,s name as formerly Elizabeth Davison. I have spent many hours trying to find this marriage & so if anyone can help I would be very very grateful.

I see that Henry (re)married to Mary Younger Marshall in Alnwick in 1855.

Perhaps he and Elizabeth either never actually married, or had a Scottish border marriage?

Has Elizabeth's death been found?

This presumably is likely to be the death: Elizabeth Furlonger, Mar qtr 1855 Alnwick 10b 189.

An Elizabeth Davison married Jun qtr 1846 Alnwick -she might be worth following up in case something went wrong with her first marriage and (if the same person) she was not free to marry Henry Furlonger.

Thank you all for your help.
Elizabeth died in childbirth in the 1st qtr 1855. Henry remarried Mary Younger Marshall 10 Novermber 1855. On the marriage it states that Henry was a widower. I will have a look @ the 1846 marriage index.

It was a border marriage, no certificates, the marriage noted in a Berwick newspaper and also the Henry Collins registers.  I don't know if those registers are available in Edinburgh or not but it would be just a ledger item without other information.

So no parental information but you take take comfort that they were married.  They could have probably married in England no matter the religion or in a register office but I think at one time it was "exciting " to run off and get married.  Folks in my area went to Winchester Virginia where there is no waiting period and 16 year olds can get married without parental permission.

The records of marriages at Lamberton Toll are held at the Scottish Record Office, and have been published. It was similar place to Gretna Green

1841 Census has this Family in Tynemouth,
George Davison, 40, Ag Lab
Sarah Davison, 40
Elizabeth Davison, 14 (1827)
Sarah Davison, 6
HO107/825/1/Tynemouth

A Sarah Davison is a Witness at the Marriage so this may be relevant.

1851 George is born c 1801 Northd, Ewart. Sarah c 1796 and Sarah 1835 is still at Home.

Hi Trish
Thank you for this I will look at the census. It looks very promising. On the 1951 census Elizabeth's birth place is Shields, Northumberland. Tynmouth could be the registration district for Shields. After being stuck on Henry & Elizabeth it is great to get all this info. Iris

It would be North Shields. See http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/REG/districts/tynemouth.html

There are 2 George and Sarah's having children in Tynemouth around the same time, one couple George is a Husbandman and I think that is the one in the census above.  The other is an accountant

Children baptised to George and Sarah the husbandman:

Adam baptised 1 Aug 1830 s/o George and Sarah Davison, Chirton

Elizabeth baptised 28 Oct 1827 d/o George and Sarah Davison, Percy Banks

Sarah baptised 10 Apr 1835 d/o George and Sarah Davison, Chirton, Coal Waggonman

Burial Alnwick:  Elizabeth Furlonger, age 29, of Bailiffsgate, buried 1 Mar 1855

Hi Janis
Thank you for all your help. Everyone is being so kind for helping me.
The burial is definately my Elizabeth. I think the 1827 birth is probably the correct one as the dates add up. Thank you once again. Iris

Hi All, and maybe I have missed the opportunity to tag into this conversation

I had come to a road block.  I am direct descendant living in Australia.

According to research I have found my 3rd Great grandfather is HENRY FURLONGER (b 11 Jul 1824 in Thursley, Surrey, England – d 29 Jun 1884 in Alnwick, Northumberland, England).  He was servant and lampman at Alnwick Castle for 48 years.

His first wife was ELIZABETH DAVISON  ……. MY BIG ROAD BLOCK .

According to census she was born 1827 Shields, Northumberland, England.  I purchased her death certificate, hoping it would provide her parents names.  She died in childbirth 27 Feb 1855.  I cannot find any record of their marriage.  Their first child William was born Sep 1848, then my GGrandmother JANE DAVISON FURLONGER was born 25 Jul 1850 in Alnwick.  It appears she died as a result of the birth of Vincent in Jan 1855.

Henry later married Mary Younger Marshall.

If anyone can assist with Henry & Elizabeth marriage, or any further information regarding Elizabeth's parents, I would be very much appreciated.

Maybe the chat above has answered a lot of my questions
Leanne

Henry was born 17 Oct 1823 in Little New Street • London, England. He was not born in Thursley, Surrey. That is the wrong Henry as I found him still single on the 1851 census still in Thursley. Your Henry is the Son of Jacob & Ann Stratton. He married Elizabeth Davison on 17 Oct 1847 at  Lamberton Toll, Scottish Border, witnesses Thomas Burnett and Sarah Davidson. I have a photo of Lamberton Toll. My tree is on Ancestry, if you have a tree on Ancestry I can invite you to see my tree as I have a lot more info on there

Hi Leanne have sent you an invite to my tree. Many couples went over the border to marry in Scotland. You should google where they married it is a very interesting read. I have been trying to find the marriage of granddaughter Eleanor Margaret Furlonger (daughter of William) & John D'Anvers Coulson have no luck at all. Iris
