Title: Vanishing family
Post by: badmama on Saturday 24 November 12 05:20 GMT (UK)
I have a very strange family.

1841 Deal Street Salford, I have Thomas Pimlott occ. tailor age 25 born ? no idea with wife Mary (nee Warhurst), son John age 2 and Elizabeth age 3.

Thomas is in a 1851 directory at Princess St, Salford.

Children born after John & Elizabeth were:-
Mary Ann Pimlott born 1845, Louisa Warhurst Pimlott 1847 Richard Powell Pimlott born 1849, Henrietta Powell Pimlott 1851.

Thomas must have been around in 1851 with being in a directory and the birth of Henrietta but I can't find a death for Thomas or children Elizabeth and John.

1851 Manchester, Mary Pimlott 35, dau. Mary 6, Lucy 4, and Richard.

1861 Mary Pimlott age 46 born Manchester was a widow living Salford in 1861 with children Mary Ann age 16, Louisa 14, Richard age 11 and Harriet (Henrietta) age 9

I also have no idea where the middle name Powell came from.

Mary Ann, Louisa & Richard were all baptised 22.8.1858 but Henrietta was baptised in 1852, strange seeing she was the last one born.

Any help sorting this family out for me would be fantastic.

Thank you
Ann

Hi,

There is a possible death for Elizabeth.

Salford 1846 Oct - Dec (vol 20 p 884).

And for John 1842 Oct-Dec (vol 20 p 572).

Hi Ann

My first thoughts in those circumstances are that he might be in hospital, prison or asylum.

If in an asylum, they are often just entered in censuses under their initials, but I can't find anything likely there.....

Another factor may be the extensive damage to 1851 records in that area - Salford ones in particular have been reconstructed (I did wonder if he'd stayed behind when the family moved) but no luck there.

Which resources do you have access to? I was wondering whether, perhaps, newspapers if he'd ended up in prison.

Sorry, those are my best thoughts at the moment!

Hello,

Family Search has a marriage 1834 - Thomas Pimlott and Mary Ann Warhurst which would fit with Louisa's middle name.

Apologies- despite reading the posts a couple of times - I missed that you had Mary Ann's maiden name. ::)

Thank you all so much

Thank you for the possible deaths of John & Elizabeth.

I have John Darbyshire & Henrietta Powell Pimlott's marriage certificate in 1868. Henrietta's father was Thomas Pimlott occupation tailor.
Thomas was age 25 in 1841, born around 1816

I have a subscription to Findmypast. Manchester newspapers mmmmm maybe they would have something about Thomas or why Richard died so young.
Thank you I have Richard's death in 1872 age 22.

I haven't got Mary Ann Pimlott's will, does it give any other details ?
From  England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966
Is this a pay to view or a subscripton sight ?

Thanks again
Ann

I found it on a subscription site, I think FindMyPast also has the same records online.

Hello again,

Free BMD has a death for a Thomas Pimlot, March quarter 1858 Salford vol 8d pg 38.

There is no age given as it is too early for that and unfortunately Salford deaths are not available on Lancashire opc.

Thank you all for the information you have all done fantastic look-ups for me.

I'll have a look on FindMyPast to see if they do have the records.

He isn't with his wife and children on the 1851 census I have looked so many times trying different combinations of his name, so maybe he's in an area where the damaged census wasn't able to be re-constructed.

The Thomas Pimlott death in 1858 sounds as if it would be him.

I didn't have him on the 1855 Slater's directory.

 :)

Cheers
Ann
