Title: Looking for a buriel in Dublin - George Carruthers d 1938
Post by: carrutc2 on Tuesday 20 November 12 18:09 GMT (UK)
I've been trying in vain to try and find where my GGrandfather is buried, which i have to presume is in Dublin.. George Carruthers, died March 1938.... no-one in our family seems to know..

I've searched Glasnevin and Deansgrange register of buriels on microfilm and online, as many of my other relations are there including my grandparents and great grandparents on another side.. whom i found there.... but no joy.

Has anyone any ideas where one would go next if they have exhausted all other avenues!! I know George was protestant and switched to Catholic when he married but its presumed he is buried in a catholica graveyard. ... I tried with his wife also, who died many years later and have tried back where she was originally from in Louth in case she brought him back there but no joy! Its a tricky one.

Any advice i guess much appreciated

I think the first place to try would be a newspaper death notice. These sometimes mention the church and graveyards..  worth a try.

Do you have a date of death ?
Makes the search much easier, as you would have have to check a few days of papers...

There's a great collection of newspapers in the National Library, and some local libraries have free access to newspapers like the 'Indo' on a website called IrishNewsArchive.

p.s. If you already tried Glasnevin and Deansgrange , then the next large Dublin cemetery to consider is Mount Jerome...

Based on the death index, I'm guessing this is may be your George on the 1911 census... a Watchmaker :

  Carruthers - Pimlico (http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Merchant_s_Quay/Pimlico/70637/)

I dont see George in Thom's 1938, but there is a watchmaker named James Carruthers listed at 20 Essex Quay that might be related...

on the 1901 return George is living in Drogheda with what appears to be the family of his wife-to-be, and on this form he gives a slightly more detailed place of birth - i.e.  'Fifeshire'

   Colgan/Carruthers/Mc Loughlin/Mc Cann/Mc Geehan household (http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Louth/Fair_Gate/Peter_Street/1567240/)

Also very handy for obits is the microfiche of the Evening Herald at Pearse Street Library. They open Saturdays and late on Thursday.
Also an online search on the Independent gives a result in the BMD section for 'George Carruthers' on March 30 1938. Do you know the exact date you are looking for ?

Hi Carrutc2,

I checked the Independent and there is an entry in the 30th March 1938 issue  for your G/grandfather George.

According to the notice his death occurred on the 29th at his residence on Essex Quay and the funeral was to take place after 10 o’clock Mass from St Michael’s and John’s R. C. Church but unfortunately the name of the cemetery is not mentioned.

Hi
If you visit Pearse Street Library you can check the registers of burials in Deansgrange and Mount Jerome cemetaries on microfilm.Because you have a date of death it should be fairly easy and quick.

Mount Jerome Register of Burials (1935-1939) Reel Number 910817

Deansgrange  Register or Internments (1927-1938) Reel Number 906133
Deansgrange  Register of Internments (1938-1944) Reel Number 906134

carrutc2
welcome to this mad world of family research
I don't have information on George but just for your information

I was researching a family that I had the burials in Mount Jerome for 1890s up to 1914
some were Protestant and some Catholic
I logically expected their son and his wife to be buried there also in the 1940s/1950s
but they weren't and no matter how hard I looked I could not find them

By a pure fluke while attending a funeral in Tallaght's St. Maelruan's CoI Church about 10 years ago
I saw their headstone! They are buried there with a son and daughter-in-law.

Strangely all four lived as Catholics so why they are buried in a Protestant churchyard I haven't worked out!
Also as almost every other relative who died in the last 130 years is buried in Mount Jerome.
I would never have looked here in a million years!

So my lesson learned was never rule anywhere out, look anyway and look everywhere
Families are funny!!!!

Hi, I'm new to this
Was checkin up on my late brother, when I came across this post
just to let you Know that most of the families mentioned . . . Carruthers & Colgans where my family
The George Carruthers that your looking for was my Grandad if that helps, he left behind a big family,
One been my dad, another George Carruthers (the watchmaker/repairer) and the rest, as you may know where my late aunts & uncles.
So any specific questions, just ask.
