Can anyone put me in the right direction of NZ records for NZ prisoners of war in WW2. My Great Uncle was a medic then and I was always told that he was in a German prisoner of war camp. So I need to be guided on the right path to finding out this information .Thanks Hereford

Have you requested the war records that are held for him, they should tell full details of service
but as these are only given for direct rellies..I'm not sure how you get on
The application details are below

Thanks Althea. The form stated that if it is for family history purposes anyone can request the record. So I will give it a go Hereford

Hi, I subscribe to An$estry who have POW records. I looked up one ancestor and while there wasn't a lot of detail it did show me which (German) POW camp he'd been in. If you want to PM me the details I can have a look if you would like.
Cheers,
Craig.

Hi Hereford
If you open the Military Service Files Copy Application Form [.rtf - approx 200k]
http://www.nzdf.mil.nz/personnel-records/nzdf-archives/accessing-military-service-records.htm
You can fill it out online, save it to documents and attach it to an email ,it saves having to print and post the forms, the big brown envelope arrives in about 2 weeks ;D ;D
Cheers Janette

I was given both my uncles war history from NZ Archives WW2, cost nothing and postage to Australia cost nothing, they were great. One uncle was captured on Crete and sent to Stalag 8B Camp where a lot of NZ'S were. There is a web site for the POW'S but I will have to search for it. The site is asking for people to give information about their relatives who could be in the photos. I found my uncle there and now its in Google. In the war history nothing was said about his time in the prison camp. Good Luck. Sally

Thanks for all the help everyone. Craig I will PM you soon . Thanks for that. Some good leads out there Hereford

Hi Hereford.
The site for the POW'S is www.wartimememories.co.uk
If you click on the yellow button on the left hand side and go down to "Prisoners of War", then scroll down the page and you will see the Stalag Camps. 8b will tell you a lot in the introduction.
My uncle was young and worked in the coal mines for almost four years. Fortunately he came home to NZ and was the last of his battalion to die. What a lovely man he was.
Regards Sally :)
