Title: Captain Edward Isaac DOWSETT & Grace RUTT
Post by: daisycat on Sunday 18 November 12 22:59 GMT (UK)
I am researching my GGG grandfather, Captain Edward Isaac Dowsett. He worked from Port Adelaide in 1840's and 1850's. I can find a lot of articles on TROVE, but nothing much on Ancestry.com except for his death record. He died at 40. I thought he was lost at sea, but am not sure. Any help would be good. I do not know that much about him except he married Grace Rutt.

Also, I am looking for death records for the Rutt family. Half of them died less than a year after their arrival in SA in 1839. Does anyone know any good websites where I can look for shipping information. I can't find anything on ancestry, but I don't think I am doing my search correctly.

Grace had an illegitimate daughter, Mary Ann that Edward brought up as his own. I think Grace was about 16 when she was born. I can find no record of her either. Any help much appreciated.

As you have already said there are many mentions of DOWSETT in SA on TROVE, mostly to do with Edward's shipping ventures but some of them concern Grace:

Grace sued another woman for using threatening behaviour and language, 1848
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/48726894

As well as the request for assistance on 2 June 1857 shown by Aussie there is another request, 24 August, 1857
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/49207041
17 November
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/49211031
and others - May, June, August, November, 1860

There is also a mention of Edward being imprisoned on a warrant owing to an unpaid bill.  He was able to post bail quickly and was released and found not guilty of non payment of the bill. 1852
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/38459510

Later in 1852 Edward was found guilty of assaulting the man who had caused him trouble; Edward was to be fined but he refused to pay so was sentenced to 'one month's committal' 24 June 1852
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/38466547
Similar charges of assault:
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/38462165

As for Edward's death, I note that the Australian Death index gives the place of death as Alberton so perhaps he didn't die at sea.

Hi Judith,

Thank you so much for that. Most of this I didn't know. I did know about the one month jail but that's all. He lead an interesting life in his 40 years it seems.

I have searched so much, but its a case of putting in the right search words.
In the end I get the same things over and over, so I will certainly be following up on what you found.

Thanks again.

It seems a bit strange that his wife would have been destitute 3 weeks after his death because I would have thought that Edward Dowsett would have 'made good money' being a sea captain, ship owner and entrepreneur.

While his years as working as a Captain was mainly coastal he did venture sometimes interstate as well on larger vessels, and for a short period he was the Master of the Government vessel, 'Yatala'.

It also looks like he ventured into the owing of vessels, moreover, in February 1852 he was the Master of the Cutter 'Midge' then in March he is referred to as the owner and agent and, he could have part owned the new Clipper 'Star' in 1854.

He also was selling oysters in 1850 at Port Adelaide.

I notice it includes William Spencer Dowsett who was son of Edward and Grace so the right family

Hi Daisy

You sure did the right thing asking here on Rootschat!  As you can see there are many people willing and able to help, often, as in this case, finding pieces of information which help to build up a picture .  Edward sounds as though he was a bit short on patience in his dealings with those who had crossed him.  While I agree with Gerry that he had quite a few shipping interests I have the impression that it was all small ventures, although, as Gerry says he did have a Government contract.  Many of his Court appearances seem to be him suing others for non-payments or them suing him so I feel it was a tenuous existence. The first application by Grace for assistance did mention that there was a house under mortgage but it seems she was still in need at least until 1860.

I am a bit surprised that there is no obituary for him which may have given a cause of death.

You say you have a subscription to Ancestry - if not you can probably access it at a local library.  There are a number of Public Trees with this family, including Grace's second marriage to George BELL.  One has a photo of the BELL family which includes Grace.

Care needs to be taken when looking at these trees as there are plenty of them which just copy each other's incorrect information.  Your Grace, for example, is listed with different parents on different trees.

It would be worth checking the cemetery that was at St. Paul's Church of England, Alberton for Edward's burial.

Details of the approximate 3,000 people interred are available from:

Daisy Hello from central victoria, I am a decendant of George Rutt and Ann cook stanmore (my GGG Grandparents)......who came to south Australia on the Hoogley in 1839 and they both died in 1840 along with two of their children. My family comes down from Grace Rutts (who was a dairy maid in England) Brother Mark Rutt who married Elizabeth Boon. Some of the information you have been given here is not quite correct because other Rutts also came to South australia, however it is a good start. I have done Huge amounts of research of my family and their arms of the tree and as My mother is still alive it is always very exciting to share with her. you may like to see my public family tree on Ancestry and I am happy always to share with whomever needs it. chat anytime!

Me again!! :) I also have a photo of Master Edward Isac dowsetts. the Journal of the government schooner 'Yatala' 6 May 1852 - 31 May 1852 by the master Edward Dowsett. Grace would not have been destitute as they were well off.....and she remarried.

Hi Lee-Ann,

Thank you so much for your reply. I would be very interested in having a photo of Capt. Dowsett. I am wondering if you would be able to email me a copy or tell me how to obtain one. I did actually find a photo of the Dowsett family at the State Library. I have just read below that you are a descendant of the Captain and Grace as well. They would be my ggg grandparents. I come from their son William Spencer Dowsett. I would be happy to email you the Dowsett photo if you would like it. William Spencer would be my gg grandfather and his son, Spencer Dowsett was my g grandfather. His daughter Lorna Dowsett was my grandma. She told my some about the Dowsetts, but left out certain parts! I don't know if that was on purpose or not. She was born in 1904. My dad shares the same name as my gg grandfather, William Spencer.  Ann Stanmore Cook and George Rutt were my gggg grandparents. My email is (*)
I am not that good at navigating around rootschat and only found your post because I got a notification email today.

How would I locate your photos? Are you on ancestry.com

I have never seen a photo of Edward. I did find a photo of Grace outside her Alberton home in Queen Street. It was on ancestry.com It would have been taken in 1880's. I would love to know more about the family. Any information you can share would be much appreciated. I did ask my grandma as much as possible when she was alive. I know the Rutts came out on the Hooghly in 1839. Also that Mary Ann was Graces's daughter and brought up as the Captain's which shows how decent he was. Grandma didn't mention this, I don't know if she even knew. I also only recently found out that half of the family died soon after arrival.

Thanks again for your reply,

Lyn

Hi, my name is Rick Dowsett and am the GGGG (I think) of Cpt Edward Dowsett. Our families continue to live in Adelaide South Australia.
I produced a facsimile of Cpt Dowsett's diary dated May 6th 1852 to May 31st 1852 which my father, Lewis Oswald Dowsett gave to the Mortlock Library in Adelaide and his Captains desk to the Maritime Museum in Pt Adelaide many years ago. My Grandfather is Oswald Dowsett who is shown in a link to an earlier photo in this blog.
I previously have not looked too far into our family history due to limited time but have considered it many times. I will assist where I can.

Hi all,
I too am related to William Spencer dowsett via my Grandmother who was Doreen Dowsett. She was the daughter of William Herbert Spencer. Although Nana would never speak of her family- who knows what family secrets where there, as William contested his wife's will and they didn't live together. Some family mysteries for sure.
I would love to see photo's of William Spencer. I think i have one of William Herbert but Nana never wrote on the back of photographs.
I can be contacted also via email:
