I am trying to find John Pritchard in 1901, but can't for the life of me find him on the census of that year!
Would anyone know how I could find him? Had he emigrated to the States because times were very difficult in Bethesda then?? I know his brother had emigrated to Vermont.
He was born on October 1 1870 in Bethesda and was christened John Roderick Pritchard. He was killed at the Fitzroy Gallery at the Penrhyn Quarry on April 4 1905 aged 34. He was married to Margaret Jane (nee Williams) who was at 21 Pen-y-bryn (Llwyn Onn) at the time of the census along with their son, Howell and her parents, Griffth and Margaret Williams.
He might be on the census, but I've reached the stage where I can't see a blooming thing!! Can a fresh pair of eyes spot him at all??
Diolch yn fawr.

There is a possible match with an arrival at New York in 1896.
The record is at:-
www.ellisisland.org
The record is apparently free to view, but you need to register(I haven't).

Assuming the emigration record is his,he should have returned by the 1901 census judging by Howell's age, unless he returned, went away again and then returned again!
However, looking at the record,it starts with his wife and records no head of household.Could it be that the enumerator has simply missed him off the record?

Now this is very intriguing........thank you both very much for your time!
I've been looking for this man for a while and he's just gone off the radar. Emigrating to the States was a last option for me as I just couldn't see him. His brother, Richard (and his wife Ann) apparently crossed the Atlantic in 1907 and after going to Newfoundland for a while, then Pennsylvania and NYC, settled in Poultney, Vermont where he died in 1948. I thought maybe that John had gone over first before returning to Wales.
Intriguing.........
Thank you very much.

Just a bit of additional information on the arrival in 1896. John was a quarryman and his destination was Rutland, Vermont. Poultney is a township in Rutland County.
I can't find him in 1900, although there are two Welsh Pritchard families in Poultney, both slate makers - Hugh, b 1841, with wife, Ann, and family & James, b 1879 with wife, Jane. Both families arrived in 1890 and are still there in 1910.
There are several other Welsh families on the same sheet.

Thank you once again for your kindness!
I know some headed just down the road from Poultney for Granville, NY........I have no real proof that he went to the States........it's just a mystery as to why he is not on the 1901 British census.
Thanks again.
