I am seeking information regarding Margaret HURLEY b. Maclean NSW AUS 1882 died Hokitika NZ 1948.
Margaret was the daughter of John HURLEY & Catherine HACKETT. She had 7 other siblings, all who stayed in Australia (other than one who died in WW1).
I have found she is buried in the local cemetery. I have found a probate notice in local NSW newspaper in Australia, but can't find a death notice or funeral notice or anything about this lady at all in New Zealand. I can see she has a (Wellington) probate file in NZ Archives...I thought I might have been able to access this via familysearch..but I gave up.
This lady does not appear to have been married, and whilst there are other Hurley's in the graveyard, I'm not aware of any familial tie with them. I just wonder why went to NZ and stayed. Can any locals shed any light on this for me?

The lady who died in Hokitika was 61 yrs and died 4/8/1947
BDM record
1947/25336 Hurley Margaret 61Y
This would give a birth year of C 1886,the only way to be sure it is your lady would be to purchase a printout of her death and hope it has her parents named

[Notice published "Sydney Morning Herald" - 26 November 1947 - page 12 - seeking grant of administration to brother and sister of Margaret HURLEY - died at Hokitika, Intestate.]
Hi MC
Haven't been able to find a Margaret HURLEY on electoral rolls who resided in the Westland (includes Hokitika) area of NZ.
It may be that she was just visiting Hokitika at the time of her death ?
Unfortunately, our PapersPast website has only newspapers up to 1945 (and those for Westland seem only to extend to 1920).
You could post a separate request on this board though, asking for a lookup in Westland newspapers for a death / funeral notice for Margaret ? [Be sure to give her date of burial in any request.]
Likewise the 1947 Probate (or Letters of Administration) file held at Archives NZ in Wellington might contain helpful information ? [Again, you could request (separately) a look-up of this. ]

Hi MC,
Here is the link to her probate
http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=23036254
If you add that to your request it makes it easier for the person doing the look up

Thank you for your replies.
i found a probate notice in the Sydney Morning Herald quite by accident after I posted on here, and found she died intestate, and left her estate to her two remaining siblings.
I'm only going by her parents Obituaries about her living in NZ. Her father John died in 1919, and it states Miss Margaret Hurley (N.Z), and then her mother Catherine passes away in 1941...mysteriously no mention of Margaret at all (as a surviving child I mean). Just piqued my curiosity. So she was in NZ prior to 1919...that's all I can deduce from that..I guess she wouldn't have to vote???
Spades, I will send you a PM - thank you.

Just a small update:
Received Margaret's death certificate by email this morning.
She passed away in Hokitika Mental Hospital on 4th Aug 1947. The undertaker was the informant...sad really..no named father/mother. She was a spinster, and "had secondary dementia some years".
The only new information I have is that she was in NZ for 32 years...so still don't know, and I guess may never know why she was there..will keep digging. Thanks again everyone for your help. :)
