Title: "Augusta Jessie" Ship - 1837
Post by: Tamsin Greig on Saturday 17 November 12 01:52 GMT (UK)
Hello

One of my husband's ancestors travelled to Australia on the Augusta Jessie in 1837 - that trip being a Government Emigrant ship.

I was just wondering if anyone had the full copy of the ships list - I am having huge problems finding her.

Look forward to hearing from someone.

Tam  :D :D

Hi Tamsin :)

It looks like Ancestry.com.au has a list - the Augusta Jessie was a bounty ship, so with luck, your ancestor's bounty immigration papers may have survived and be digitised (on Ancestry also).

The Bounty Immigrants are listed on familysearch.org -  https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://hr-search-api:8080/searchapi/search/collection/1542665
good luck  :)

Thanks Marcel - the two Sarah Waters listed on the link you provided were not mine!  Mine travelled on the Augusta Jessie and the two ships mentioned on that link were not that one.

I will keep trying but any other hints would be greatly welcomed.

The only document that has survived for the Augusta Jessie is a partial disposal list of male immigrants.

Did she travel by herself or was she with family?
From familysearch there is a David Waters aged 30 years, a butcher, married with 3 children.
cheers  :)

Hi Marcel

Just found something else - Sarah travelled with David Waters - her uncle.  Her father apparently had already been transported here earlier as a convict.  I am really keen to see how the record is and if her name is attached to that of David Waters.

Thanks Dundee - see David's name there - very happy to see something!

Thanks for all your help everyone.

Just a quick general query - if I want to find out about convicts (in family) is it best to post on Australian forum or English forum?

Hi there

Hope you can read the attachment - may need to enlarge and print out. There is a list of the passengers aboard the Augusta Jessie - arrival 11 October 1837 - available from the NSW State Archives - digital image available. There is a David Waters mentioned travelling with 3 others (all children??).

Cheers
Caryn

No individual information  but you may be interested in these mentions in TROVE  of the barque Augusta Jessie in 1837.

There are quite a few more if you want to search but I can't see any extra information.

Arrival 11 October 1837, 393 immigrants on board - various accounts of the numbers in other mentions.

Augusta Jessie had sailed 6 June via Cape of Good Hope.  Did not dock immediately in Sydney owing to 3 cases of "hooping-cough"

Thomas Paine, farm labourer, 26, 3 children, employed by C. Campbell Esq. Limestone, wages 25 pounds per annum with rats!  ;)

Thomas Paine, as found by Flattybasher9, had 3 children and was then employed by C Campbell at Limestone.

This is possibly the son of Robert Campbell whose house, Duntroon, is still standing in Canberra - in the Limestone Plains.

Thankyou for the replies of the Augusta Jessie. Will try and find the complete passenger list for that ship.
