Would someone please be kind enough to do a look up in the 1871 Census for a John BURTON born 1837 Alton. I'm trying to find who his wife was - he appears married in 1881, but away from home, and is a widower by 1891. Hopefully they should be together in 1871 - they had a son William BURTON, who was born in 1869, though gives his birthplace in later census as Sheffield, so it's possible the family could show up in the Sheffield area in 1871.
Many thanks

Hi
The transcribed 1871 is available on Family Search but he doesn't seem to be there
-
Son William is with his Burton grandparents Hugh & Ann in 1871 living in Alton

-
Thankyou for both these bits of info.
I didn't know the 1871 was available through that site!! A v useful revelation - thanks!!
-
He is still with his grandmother in 1881

At the moment the only John Burton born in Alton, Staffs on the 1871 is this.
Living Canal Side House, Norton, Staffs. RG10/2879/76/34
John Burton 38 Canal Lock Keeper.
Hannah wife 46 b Cheshire, Congleton
Sarah dau 7 b Horsley, Staffs
:-\
-
mmmm.... odd that he seems to have vapourised. It's possible that maybe he was 'away' again somewhere out of Staffs and perhaps wasn't too specific about his POB?
Thanks for looking for me :)
-
Or this one maybe more nearer the correct age and occupation
RG10/2364/68/17 living Unstone
John Burton, head, married 31 General Labourer, b Alton, Derbys
Lydia wife 34 b Turnditch, Derbys.
:-\
The only way to be sure of his wife is to get the sons birth certificate
-
That sounds perfect - and 'Turnditch' is the name of a farm in the village of Alton. Great sleuthing Thank you so much!! :)
-
Patrish - sorry to come back to you and not spotting it straightaway, but can you remember where 'Unstone' was on that census piece? i.e. which county? Sounds a bit like a made up name or a mis transcription ???
-
Did William give his fathers name as John when he married? What was John's occupation?
2 census entries with grandparents always makes me suspicious - particularly when they have the same surname.
-
I haven't seen his marriage cert, but despite him being iwth grandparents in 1871 and 1881, he does appear with his father John and his grandmother Ann in 1891. William's occupation was Wire drawer. Ann Burton gives her pob as Bristol in 1891 and 1881, so looks to be the right set (even though the village being alive with Burtons!)
-
Its Unstone, a civil parish or un parished area in the registration dist of Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

I havent been able to find a marriage between a John Burton and a Lydia :(
-
Thankyou patrish. I've not found a marriage either - am currently trawling my paper copy of the 1841 for a potential young Lydia! :)
-
1881 has John Burton 43 b Alton - relative
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X3KS-H5L
Marital status on image is unmarried but has just been sort of "dittoed" by the enumerator from previous occupants status
-
mmm... John did have a brother Thomas b 1831 which looks like him. I haven't tracked Thomas beyond 1841 when he was in Alton, so can't confirm the link with this one living in Leigh, but I will. Still leaves the mystery of the 'wife' Lydia from the 1871 doesn't it? ???
-
It could be that they never legally married, it was more common than people think
I,ve searched Ancestry and the free BMD from 1857 (when John would be 20) up till 1871 (when it says married on the census ) :(
-
yes, you could be right patrish. There's certainly something not quite 'normal' about this family.
-
I,ve been looking for a birth of a Lydia circa 1840 in Derbyshire or Staffordshire, nothing posative.
On the 1841 cenus I did find a promising one, Lydia Adams but she can be found still living with her father in 1871, so not her :(
Also I cant find a conclusive birth reg for the "son" William circa 1869 of course we are not sure which county he was born in.
The nearest I have found =
William Wright Burton Sept q. 1868 Sheffield 9c- 412 although no middle name is mentioned on the cenusus's :(
William Burton June q 1871 Sheffield 9c -417 ages can be out a little on census's as we all know .
His birth is the key to finding out who Lydia was, if she was his mother :-\
-
There is a birth
Mar 1869 for William Burton born Ecclesall Yorkshire
in later census he is married a Christine and all their children are born Alton Staffordshire

You are right there is, :)
Good find.... as I thinks that vital
I searched under just Sheffield as per the census , not Yorkshire ::)
-
Can we approach this from another angle perhaps?
Where does William fit into your FH?
Are you descended from one of his children? If so - who did William marry & when?
You mentioned in an earlier reply that you don't have a copy of his marriage cert so the info that John is his father seems to be based solely on the 1891 entry.
Whilst I am not saying that John isn't his father - there is always the chance that the enumerator made that assumption. It just seems odd that he is with his grandparents in 1871 and 1881 but no sign of parents
I really think you need to see the marriage cert to ensure we are on the right track
