Title: Royal Military Asylum, Chelsea
Post by: RayDen on Friday 16 November 12 14:15 GMT (UK)
Hi

I don't seem to be able to access the Royal Military Asylum website.  I was able to search the site on:

www.rma-searcher.co.uk/chelsea

but every time I enter that I now get:

HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error
The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid

Does anyone have any idea if there is a new site?

This is one site, may not be the one you want:

Hi Anne

Thanks for that - I have seen that site.  I have a feeling that they may have removed the free access to the site and are now requiring payment for the information.  I hope not but I think this may be the case.

More here, and see links at the bottom. Maybe A. W. Cockerill was involved with the site you are seeking. http://www.achart.ca/articles/york/history.html

Hi Rex

Yes it looks like it is now a pay site.  The admissions register was online but you now have to buy a CD.  Pity that - its OK if you know that you had ancestors who were at the school, but I found the ancestors I was after initially from the 1851 census, but also from googling the names.  Don't understand why if they had done all the work and put it online why they then had to start charging for it?
Ah well!

I am too trying to get details of a relative who was here in 1871. Even the email address of the guy that has the CD's doesn't work any more :( Has anyone had any luck with this ??

Thanks for all the info, how horrible that it seems to now all be gone  :'( without that website and it's treasure chest of lists I'd never have found the starting points for our Maltby ancestors. --- If it's of any help, here is a PDF file for the 3rd Regiment Foot Guard.  Plus an alphabetical one for the Chelsea Asylum, MAB-to-MaCLAREN.

Both were saved off the Royal Military Asylum website while it was accessible.

This is probably why the owner went 'private'-  to try and recoup some of his costs.

The chap who researched and transcribed the Chelsea material was a Peter J Goble.  The cost of the CD is (was) £15 + £1.50 postage.  However he also transcribed the records for : The Royal Hibernian Military School, Dublin :  and these records are still available online.

Here is a link to the CD application form for the Chelsea CD: http://www.achart.ca/articles/york/images/Order_Form_AdminCD.pdf

Thanks Ray 8), although I've never been keen with purchasing CD's online, yet this one's may be worth checking out if it's good as the old website was. --- Also found one more I'd stashed, however it is 582kb and too large to be attached here. " Chelsea RMA Apps by date of Indenture "
