Hi
I have recently traced a (potential) ancestor to Dublin on 2nd January 1896 with a death certificate copy but I am unsure as to how to find their grave (if indeed they have one) in Dublin.
Her name was Mary Anne Nixon and she died on 2nd January 1896 at 78 Upper Dorset St Dublin North.
Aged 73 yrs approx at date of death, Mary was the widow of a farmer named John Nixon (He appears to have predeceased her - perhaps in 1872).
If there is any mention of Co Westmeath on her grave (assuming she has one) there is an excellent chance that this Mary was the mother of my GG Henry Nixon - who was born at Rosmead Co Westmeath in November 1850.
I know she was alive in 1889 as I have a court records from NSW mentioning her.
As I live in Sydney Australia I am not quite 'round the corner' ! .... so I would greatly appreciate any suggestions/assistance people can give !
Cheers

The best place to start is with a search of Glasnevin online. It's a pay-website, for one of the larger cemeteries serving Dublin.
see : Dublin Graveyards (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,501983.0.html) (RootsChat resources topic)
Other larger cemeteries in Dublin at the time were Deansgrange & Mount Jerome.
What denomination were your Nixons ?
Another option would be to check to see if there was a death notice in a newspaper. These sometime mentioned the church and cemetery.

Hi shanew147
Thanks for the tips.
I tried a death notice search of the Irish Times - as there is an Index reference that comes up on FindMyPast but when I checked the IT site no trace for a Nixon at that particular time - curious !
She was Church of Ireland denomination.

She was Church of Ireland denomination.
....
Then push Mount Jerome up the list - they have a website but you cant search online yet. They will do a search for a fee.
It's worth checking online for MI's and photos - there was a collection of these for Mount Jerome on IGP web, although the link isn't working for me at the moment.

OK shanew147 thanks for the advice.
MI's ??? not sure what you mean ??

Hi shanew147
I just managed to get thru to the Mount Gerome site thru IGP but no 'joy' there unfortunately ... Any other possibilities ?
Cheers

The IGP website doesn't have all the Mount Jerome inscriptions. You would have to arrange a search with Mount Jerome to be certain. Even if there isn't a headstone then they should have some sort of burial record.
If the burial is not in Mount Jerome then it's just a case of trying each of the others - next biggest after Glasnevin is Dean's Grange. Opposite side of the city, but possible.
If there was a Co. Westmeath connection then it's always possible that the burial took place there..

MI's = Memorial Inscriptions, e.g. on headstones

the Irish newspaper Archive has the "Westmeath Examiner" online.
Pay-site, I think, but maybe it's on FindMyPast?

Hi eadaoin & shanew147
OK thanks.
I think the Westmeath newspaper is available on my National Library site here in Australia. Will check.
If I can locate an obituary then all might be solved.

Hi All
Well I have managed to get a copy of the death certificate for M A Nixon (D of D 2 January 1896) after relying upon the Irish Times Index on FindMyPast (Transcriptions). But when I eventually managed to track down the Irish Times online thru my State Library site I am unable to find any trace of this death !!
Most curious. How can this be so ? I have searched the day after and selected other dates for obituaries but without success. There must be a trace somewhere in this paper ?
-
I dont know the source of this index that Find My Past have, but maybe there's a typo or mistake in the index, or the notice actually in a different paper ?
The dates tally, which is strange... I dont think there were two different editions of the paper, and it doesn't sound like a late notification as it's two days later.
Did you find the section for the death notices ok in the papers you looked at ?
Usually these were at the top left of page 1, but sometimes were continued on another page if these overran.
Have you asked Mount Jerome do do a search for you in their registers ?
After Glasnevin I think this is most likely location. There is a charge for a search .. might be the only way to confirm or rule out Mount Jerome, particularly if there isn't a headstone..

Hi shanew147
Yes i found the death notices listed on Page 1 top left corner. None continued overleaf on the issues I looked at and the site is a bit clumsy to use for whole of paper type searches.
I have not approached the cemeteries yet. Thought I would exhaust the newspapers first since I have located free web sites.
I have just posted a request for a death cert copy re a Nixon in Delvin Co Westmeath 1872 to Ireland Govt Office Records. I usually find incidental information can help to better define/progress family research. The NSW Assisted immigration records, for eg, here in Australia are a great source of information. They even have a receipt book record which lists names and occupations. Every detail matters in this game !

Hi Robert, I located your record in the IT on 4th Jan 1896. The print is extremely patchy but I can make out '78 Upper Dorset Street' and 'Mary ? widow of the late John Nixon of ? County Westmeath, in her 73rd year' and '... Mount Jerome this (Saturday) morning'. Hope this helps.
-
Robert, looks like your main query has been solved, which is great. You may well have the following already but just in case not, here is a transcription of a marriage record from Killucan Co Westmeath Church of Ireland parish records.
27th April 1839: John Nixon of Delvin to Mary Anne Robinson of Craddenstown. Witnessed by James Johnston and Thomas Gee.
The link is

Hi johnjensen and MollyMoo19
Bingo !
Thats the Nixon reference I needed. Westmeath is the key word.
The Griffiths Valuation lists only a few Nixons in Westmeath in 1854 so in theory they are easy to trace. Yes Its looking very VERY likely that this Nixon death in January 1896 refers to the mother I am researching. I was aware of the marriage in 1839 at Killucan thank you !
Whereabouts (ie Page No) in the IT on the 4 January 1896 is the mention of Mary ??
I did a general search for Nixon on that day and came up with zero traces.
I now have free access to this paper so will revisit the site once I have the page reference.
I found using the IT site rather hard. Not easy to move about the publication at all.
We have a site called 'Trove' here in Australia which lists newspapers and lots of other library holdings. The newspaper search function is very user friendly so I guess I have been spoilt.
Thank you both for your assistance !
This is another breakthrough for my family history.
Cheers

Hi MollyMoo19
At last I have located the item ! Front page after all. The town mentioned in front of the words 'County Westmeath' is indistinct. I thought it could have been 'Rathwire' but am not sure.
Yes I can well understand why the IT optical search function failed to find this reference ...
I will now contact the Mount Jerome cemetery.
Do Dublin or Irish cemetery records contain much useful info or does it depend on the circumstances of the day and the personalities involved ?? Curious.
I managed to trace a grave photo on the web for one of her 3 sons (John B 1846) in the UK - at Epsom - D of D 1927.
Are photos for graves in Dublin easy to obtain ?
I was in Ireland last year but was looking for evidence at Rosmead/Delvin and Killucan/Rathwire - without success. Spent a lot of time then wading thru overgrown graveyards - it was interesting !
Cheers

Hi All
I have just received details of a burial in Mount Jerome Cemetery in early January 1896.
The name of the person is Mary Anne Nixon (Date of death 2nd January).
I have a copy of her death cert.
I also checked the MJ website for grave details but found they do not accept credit cards (annoying) or even Paypal. Is there any other way of establishing the details of the actual grave and possibly obtaining a photograph ??
As I live in Sydney Australia so I am not quite 'around the corner" !

....
For a photo you would probably need to establish the plot number so the grave could be found first.
Headstone Transcriptions and matching photos for many graves in Mount Jerome are available on the IGP website.

Robert
If you have the grave number I will try and get there over the weekend and get a photograph for you
-
I dont think there's a grave number available yet... just a mention in the Times
see : Re: Nixon, Mary Anne - location of grave in Dublin (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,622926.msg4720430.html#msg4720430)
I just tried IGP web to see if this grave is included in recent updates, but site seems to be having problems at the moment..

Hi shanew147
I tracked a site which had headstone photos (Probably IGP) for Mount Jerome and searched for the name 'Nixon" .
Unfortunately my particular Nixon was not present.

I have responded to your generous offer by PM hope it comes thru !

I happened to be on to Mt J today on other business and they tell me there is no stone on that grave. You could have sent an email to them for that sort of information and grave ref B 104/ 355 grant no 9981.

I will look for that over the weekend and get back to you

Hi annieoburns
Many thanks for the grave site info. Thats amazing.
When I looked at the MJ site earlier I got the distinct impression that they charged for anything and everything !

Hi all
Do bankruptcy records from 1890 still exist in Dublin ? If so how can they be accessed ? Do any web sites have such information ?
I have traced a few newspaper records which suggest that Mary Nixon may have been present in the Bankruptcy Court in September 1890 and would like to follow up.
Cheers

I had a chance to look at a couple of old Thom's today and I see a listing for a John Nixon, grocer and vintner, at 80 Upr Dorset Street in 1885(ish) and 1890 but not 1895.
Shane do you have any Thom's for early 1890s? Might be interesting to see what year the listing disappeared. Could be a son of John senior of course. I can't actually see any death of a John Nixon in Dublin North in the early 1890s.
-
Hi Johnjensen
Yes the address is the key point.
A John Nixon (farmer) was the husband of Mary Anne. They married in Killucan in 1839.
I suspect the John Nixon Grocer at 80 U Dorset St is a relative but may not be the husband. The grocer acquired a alcoholic license in 1874. Which kind of matches the end of Griffiths references to John/Mary Anne Nixon c1872 (if memory serves me correctly) renting at Rathwire near Killucan. However in 1886 a marriage reference here in NSW describes Henry Nixon (My GG) son of the LATE John Nixon of Co Westmeath. So I have worked on the assumption that John the father was deceased before 1886.
Its all a bit tricky but I do suspect the grocer is a relative somehow.
Cheers

I see that Jno. Nixon at #80 in the 1885 listing. He's gone by 1891 .... dont have anything in between at the moment :
1891 - Dorset Street, Upper
78 Tenements
79 Mrs. O'Moore, Mrs bootmaker
80 Bernard McDonald, grocer & wine merchant
[Eccles Lane]
same listing in 1894.
Working back in time, John Nixon is at #80 in 1879. Skipping back to 1872 shows a Joseph Nixon, a 'grocer &c' at that address - maybe his father ?
In 1868 the address is listed as 'John Scarlett, grocer &c'

Hi shanew147
Thank you for the additional info.
I gather you mean Nixon not Dixon for the directory listings ?

my mistake - I mixed up a surname from another search - but did correctly check Nixon for the entries above
double checked & fixed!

I did use the wrong surname for follow-up parish searches -
possible record of several childen born to John Nixon and his wife Mary Corcoran at 80 Upr. Dorset St. between 1873 and 1879.

I think this John and Mary may possibly appear as witnesses on a marriage in 1865.
see : Peter Orr/ Margaret McCann marriage, St. Mary's RC (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/2db8ea0064235)
Residence for both them are given as 'Howth'

Thats interesting.
So the John Nixon grocer is not my John Nixon (Farmer) who is married to Mary Anne in 1839.
The death of Mary Ann Nixon at 78 U dorset St in 1896 is a near coincidence in space given the Nixon grocer reference for 80 U dorset St a few years prior ?
Cheers

-
It's looking like a coincidence to me - I think this John was single and in Dublin in 1865, and married to Mary Corcoran some time after that but before 1873.
I thought a marriage might show up on IrishGenealogy to help confirm or rule this out - but nothing showed up. If they lived and maybe married in Howth, then it would be just outside the area covered.
Unusual, given the relatively uncommon name, so close in space & time!

sorry diverting your topic... but will post one more detail on that Nixon/Corcoran couple in case it turns out to be useful to someone else... their likely marriage in Dublin North district in 1866 :
Name: John Nixon
Registration district: Dublin North
Event type: Marriage
Year :1866
Volume : 2 / Page: 738
a matching entry appears for a Maria Corcoran.
