I am looking for information on Sarah Ann Dolby. She was in a relationship with Edward Nucella Emmett, (who married Sarah Spottiswood in 1949 and moved to Bendigo Victoria in 1852, founding the Bendigo Bank) which produced three children in Adelaide, Australia in 1840's. I believe she was born in Threadneedle, London in abt. 1827. She ended up in Adelaide, dying in New Parkside. Her children were Sarah Edith Dolby Emmett, Mary Dolby Emmett and Edward Nucella Dolby Emmett, all born in the Adelaide area.
Mary Dolby Emmett was my grandfather's grandmother.
I have the following questions. If anybody could help with any one of these questions that would be great, also any other information. I am a beginner on this site and am not even sure which country this website is in. I am in Australia.
1. Was she a convict?
2. Who were her parents.
3. When did she arrive? What was the name of the ship and what is a good website to get this info?
4. Did she have any siblings?
5. Did she ever marry? I don't think she did because she was referred to as "Mrs Emmett" in her death notice (trove.com). 1899
6. What happened to her after E.N. Emmett left her? I have found one reference to Jane Dolby lining up for destitute relief, having three children by Emmett. But that is Jane, not Sarah.
7. Was her father or mother a convict.

Hi, Thankyou for your information. I am not sure. I think the 1828 is more around the right area. She died at the end of 1899 (Im not sure exact date as I am not looking at my information, around Nov to Dec) at age 72. I thought her parents were Charlotte and Samuel, but now I am not so sure.

Edward Nucella Emmett's banking activities were connected with gold mining. Maybe it's possible that Sarah Ann Dolby's parents were also part of the gold mining community ? Not all immigrants to Australia were convicts - some came over to mine gold and other precious minerals.
Bearing in mind that Sarah Ann's children were born between 1843 and 1851, and Edward Nucella Emmett married Sarah Spottiswoode Forsyth Blackham in 1849, a marriage between them would have been difficult. She assumed the name of the father of her children, but one or other (or both) of the marriages (if they took place) wouldn't have been legal.
-
Thankyou for your reply. It seems that Sarah and Edward were never married and that he married Sarah Spottiswood in 1849, overlapping the birth of children with the two mothers, then he left Sarah in Adelaide and moved to Bendigo with his wife and family.
-
There is comment on TROVE forum.http://trove.nla.gov.au/list?id=11960
Click on "Show Comments". Contact might be able to provide more info.
Edward Nucella Emmett had overlapping relationships and children with both Mary Ann Dolby and Sarah Spottiswoode Blackham.

Neither South Australia nor Victoria were penal colonies so Sarah would not have been a convict if she emigrated to either.
I was going to suggest you search for information on TROVE but someone has tagged many items about Edward. He was declared insolvent in South Australia. Perhaps that is the reason he moved to Bendigo. I haven't read them all so you may like to have a browse. The Bendigo Bank was founded with one other and purchased by the Bank of Victoria.

I would agree with you that Sarah DOLBY and Edward N EMMETT were never married as I doubt he would be advertising his marriage in the newspaper along with the births and deaths of his children with Sarah BLACKHAM. Have you considered that perhaps DOLBY was not Sarah's maiden name. Perhaps she was already married when she met Edward.

This incorporation of the other half's name makes things very confusing. Maybe the family used it as a substitute for marriage ? ;D

Thank you for such good information. I had not considered that Sarah Dolby's name might be a married name. I think there is more to the story. My grandfather had Dolby in his middle names. He would have been 3 generations away from Sarah. He didn't know anything about his family past his parents. He said they did not discuss things like this and now I am starting to see why! I think there are more skeletons to uncover.
Another thing is that there seems to be a connection to three Dolby women, Sarah,Jane and Mary. Jane is located in an 1857 newspaper (trove) as applying for destitute relief and having three children by Emmett.
I am on ancestry, but just can't seem to find any arrival records for Sarah Dolby.
Thanks again for all the info from posters. Much appreciated.
-
Any information regarding any of the above names would be good. These names have been mentioned in connection with Edward Nucella Emmett (my 3rd great grandfather). Area is Adelaide in 1840's and 50's.
I have posted a bit on the Sarah Dolby thread. My main question for this thread, is; would these be different people or the same person? I know Sarah had Mary Dolby with Edward Emmett (no marriage as far as I know), although I thought she had three children. Jane Dolby was applying for destitute relief with three children by Emmett in 1857 (Trove). I have also seen the name Mary Dolby in connection with him but I don't know where.
I can't find any information on their arrival in Australia, although I am on Ancestry.com. Im not particularly good at using the immigration search.
thank you for any help.

I can't see a Sarah DOLBY arriving in SA however not all passenger lists survive. It is possible that Edward met her in Tasmania.
There are resources for each State on the Australian Resources and Offers board

Have you read all the items about Edward in SA on TROVE?
Possibly Sarah, Jane and Mary are the one and same person.
Link to 1857 item re Jane DOLBY , single woman who had three children to a Mr EMMETT.

State Records of SA hold records for the destitute and assisted immigrants arrivals. Once again the assisted immigrant database is not functioning >:(.

This is hard to unravel. There is a definate reference to Jane Dolby with three children by Emmett in Trove 1856 and 1857, and also Sarah's death notice, she went by the name Emmett, although no marriage took place it seems. Sarah's daughter by E Emmett, Mary had her birth recorded. Sarah's son Edward died in 1911 at the age of 59 and his death was recorded with Sarah Dolby and Edward Nucella Emmett as the parents, although no birth was recorded that I can find.
-
Hi daisycat
This is an odd record? Maybe Sarah DOLBY and Edward altered their surnames since Edward EMMETT married before the birth of Sarah's son Edward.

Thanks for your research. I saw the J. Dolby article and further she is mentioned by name as Jane, so it's not a missprint. Im thinking he had children with Jane and Sarah?? The age of the children match Sarah's children. I thought also that maybe she had used a different name to claim rations. I guess I will never know these details. She was only 15 or 16 when she had the first child in 1843, also named Sarah.
This is why I am trying to find her parents and siblings to see if there is a Jane. Also, the name of her father so I can research him on trove to find out what his life was like, why Sarah had children with him at such a young age.
-
The age of the children match Sarah's children.
For what it's worth, I think that Sarah and Jane are the one and same person. Perhaps her name was Sarah Jane.
I believe she was born in Threadneedle, London in abt. 1827
What is the source of this info and why do you believe she was born in England?
I really don't hold out much hope for you finding anythng about Sarah/Jane DOLBY. It wasn't unusual for girls of 15/16 to emigrate however I see no DOLBY or DALBY however not all ships manifests survive.
http://www.familyhistorysa.info/shipping/passengerlists.html
Assisted immigration to the colony of South Australia commenced in 1847 so bit pointless searching those records.
Perhaps she was from Tasmania as Edward was back and forth from SA quite frequently when he was horse trading. He sounds a bit of a cad to me.
Perhaps another chatter may find something for you.

Great summary, Cando.
I'm also wondering what the evidence is for Sarah Dolby's birthplace and date. This may be an enormous red herring and I'm in two minds whether to put it up :-\ but the Tasmanian Colonial Family Links has a Sarah Jane DOLBEY born to a Sarah DOLBEY in 1838, father listed as John DOLBEY. Sarah Jane DOLBEY b 1838 marries George MCNEAIR in Tasmania in 1857.
http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=8
I am not experienced in Tasmanian research and there seems to be little further information about either of the parents but it seems to me to be possible that your Sarah DOLBY was older than was recorded at her death. This Sarah DOLBEY may have been as young as 14 when her daughter was born in 1838, so a birthdate of 1824 or earlier would fit this woman. (75 or older in 1899).
Perhaps she met Mr Emmett after the birth of this child and went to South Australia as Mrs Emmett with him in 1840. ???
A tenuous suggestion at best :-\

I'm a descendant of Sarah Ann Dolby and was always told that I'm related to Madam Sainton-Dolby. I don't have any documentation to confirm this—it's just something that's been passed down through the family. Not sure if that helps or complicates things!
