Title: Death in India
Post by: menamac60 on Thursday 15 November 12 23:02 GMT (UK)
Hi My gt gt grandmother and her baby were killed by tiger/s in India.  Her husband was Sgt James Wilson, 89th foot.  Service no.2212.  resided in Umballa.   I think her name was Frances Haddock born 1825 but would have been Wilson at the time of her death.  I've tried to find out the circumstances of her death and she is buried in India.  Can anyone give me any help or point me in a right direction. It has been suggested it would have been recorded in newspapers but don't know how to go about this.

Thank you in anticipation. :) xxx

I've split your post from another topic and moved it to the correct place so that we can hopefully help you with finding more details.

You mention that Frances was born c1825 but any idea when she died or was married?

Hi

I am not very good at this yet. I have read about your relative in India. I have been researching my own ancestors and have just returned from a trip to India.

Your best bet is as follows

*  Write to the Catholic Church in Umballa (address can be found on the internet and give approximate date etc.
*  Write to The Church of North India and request a search of their records
*  Write to the Bishop of North India and request a search.

I found my Great Grandfather's death record and now have an extract of his death certificate. Currently the Catholic Church Priest in charge is searching for the grave site.

Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for.

regards and best wishes

I've had a look in the three online sources that I tend to use for these things.

FIBIS cannot locate Frances' death; no likely marriages either. I have also failed with FamilySearch and the British Library database.

This doesn't mean the record doesn't exist....

I wonder if you might find something via James' army record at TNA, or maybe via a regimental history (this post http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/INDIA/1997-10/0877528660 is so old that the link almost certainly won't work, but the book will be in existence)

Newspaper searches via British Newspaper Archive would only reference UK papers; whether her death would be sufficient to get them to report it is another question.

I have a service no. 2212.  He served in the Crimean and Indian mutiny. When he left the army he went to Carlow and is buried there according to a member Genes Reunited.  It would be great if have found out more about him.  :) xxx

Thank you Aghadowey for moving my post to best place. I don't even know how to start a new thread. :)  I can't find a marriage for them either.  Worse again with my husband's family can't get by mother-in-law, as if they never existed. What a family!! Kind Regards
