Can anyone help as to the best place to look up what happend to the soilders of the 5th Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders in October 1916.
My Great uncle Noel P Cameron Serjeant in the Cameron Highlanders 5th Battalion died on 18/10/1916 in France and his name is on the Thiepval Monument. Service number 9286.
His Brother was also in this battalion and he died at home later that year from his wounds 17/12/1916. Service No: S/10571 George D Cameron.
I have looked up accounts of the battle of the Somme but can't see anything for around this time for this battalion.

The 5th (Service) Battalion came under orders of 26th Brigade in 9th (Scottish) Division.
The 9th Division, in 1916, took part in:
The Battle of Albert*
The Battle of Bazentin* in which the Division captured Longueval
The Battle of Delville Wood*
The Battle of Le Transloy*
This last battle looks to be the one, as it took place in October 1916.

From 9th Division history this was the Battle of the Pimple and attack on Snag trench near the Butte de Warlencourt 18th October 1916. 5th Camerons, 1st South Africans and 9th Seaforths were involved. 67 Camerons died on the 18th.
His will is in the Scottish National Archives
reference SC70/8/453/11

Thank for your information on Noel. I really appreciate this. I will have a look at the Scottish National archives for this and see if I can find anything on the other two brothers who were both in the same war. One died two months later at home and the other 1917 in the battle of Cambrai.

You can look for their details on www.cwgc.org and www.snwm.org . If there is a will it will be on the lower part of the SNWM entry.
