Title: General Posts
Post by: FrankAT on Wednesday 14 November 12 17:26 GMT (UK)
When I send personal a message, the next time I log on I am taken to my messages only.

How do I negotiate to the general posts on my subject again without having to messages again?

Hi FrankAT

There is no way to that, I think. When you use the PM service,  you are in a dedicated area of RootsChat. You have to select to leave it (just like you have to select to enter it) by clicking to move on elsewhere.

Re-reading...

Are you saying that next time you log on to RootsChat as a site afresh, you automatically go the Personal Message section?

Hello.
No, it is when I log in to Rootschat that I am taken to the home page. I see at the top of the page three rows of text . The top one is telling me I have '15 messages', the second one says, 'show unread posts since your last visit, and the third says, 'show new replies to you posts'.

Whichever I click I am taken to the messages page from where I sent a reply.

I would like to see all the posts on the subject.

Hi
Ignore the messages bit as that is only personal messages.  The other two take you to unread new posts or new replies to your posts, if there are any.
To find your own posts go into your Profile - there is a button along the top - and that has an option to show all posts you have made.
Hope that makes it clearer.   If not, try clicking the Help button along the top where everything is explained in more detail.

[Andrea, just about to post when saw the alert that there was another posting before me, will leave as is, though duplication].

When you log on, is it this link you use www.rootschat.com/ or this one www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php

The second takes you through to the main boards selections of the forum.

What is it you are trying to do at this point?

Have a general look around the boards or look at any personal activity?

The three lines that you mention at the top of the page:

Welcome back, xxx, you have xxx messages, x are new - this section takes you through to the PM section of RootsChat with your inbox and outbox of personal messages.

Show unread posts since last visit - this will include a listing of all new posts by everyone since you last logged on. You do not have to have posted on these threads as the listing is just a general round-up of activity.

Show new replies to your posts - this will have the links to any thread that you have either started yourself or you have posted on and will only show entries if there is any new activity (you should also have received an email notification that there has been some new activity on it).

Trying to undertand where you are at to try to help here... :)

Monica

When I log on I am with 'rootschat.com'. The rest is greyed out. When I receive a personal message and reply to it I am in that mode, as it were.
When I need to look at all the post for my particular subject (in my case 'Skirbeck Quarter'), well, that is where I struggle to get to that area.

I think it is possible best to reply 'generically' to any questions?

I have my own little rootschat routine:

After being in the PM bit when I am finished (or when I first log in) I always click on

1) Show new replies to your posts to see if I have any.

2) If there are none I go to show unread posts since last visit to see what other people are posting - and have a browse around to see if there is anything interesting.

3) If I want to specifically go back to a thread where I have previously posted even if there were no answers in new replies (1 above) then I go to PROFILE and then at the bottom of the page "show last posts of this rootschatter".  But only if I specifically want to add something again to a thread I have contributed to in the past.

OR..if I am not in PM section and just arrive at the welcome page - I click on Forum which takes me to the boards.. and either repeat 1-3 above, or just browse around the boards from there.

If I understand your question - what you want to do is go to a specific thread of your own...so you need to follow instructions for 3 above. That will take you to a list of all your posts. Click the one you want and it will take you to that post.  If others have responded later on then you will end up in the middle of the thread and need to click on the number 1 at the top of the thread (if there are more than one pages to the thread) to get to the most recent one.

Is this the thread you are talking about, started by Redroger :

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,365857.0.html

Which you'll find on the Lincolnshire board :

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,23.0.html

If more people haven't replied you won't receive an email notification. I wonder if you might be best to look in your profile under where it says 'Show Posts'. This would lead you to your own replies on that particular thread, providing you want to read them again.

I save the RootsChat Forum page to my favourites and log on from there.

Hope this makes sense ?

Added : Just noticed Milly's reply !  :) :)

Thank you all  for your replies and help. I am sure I will get very quickly from one to the other now.

I need to look at my replies, of course, but I then very often need to get back to the main posts topic to refresh and look into something I may have missed previously.

I will try and do as you all advise.

Thanks again
