Title: Researching the McGrath family of Castleshannon, Ballyheigue, Co. Kerry.
Post by: SuasAnAbhainn on Tuesday 13 November 12 17:19 GMT (UK)
Hoping to connect with descendants of the following McGrath family members:

Thomas is thought to have migrated via Canada to St.Louis and thence to California. All the others migrated via Cobh (Queenstown) to New York. Some may have travelled onward to St.Louis, where their sister Ellen emigrated to in 1907.

Since they all seem to have gone to America and you are looking for descendants I'm wondering if this post wouldn't be better placed on the U.S. board?

Rootschat doesn't allow posting details of living/possibly living people and the children of this family could still be alive.

However, the most recent U.S. census is now 1940 which should be a help to you. Have a look at www.familysearch.org to see lots of U.S. databases including census records.

and in 1901

  Magrath household, Castleshannon townland (http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kerry/Ballyheigue/Castleshannon/1425410/)

Parents for this household are Thomas and Johanna

I think the parents full names are Thomas McGrath and Johanna  Burkett... fairly distinctive surname for Johanna which should help identify the family and assist in tracing children...

SuasAnAbhainn, I do not know what information you already have & what you are hoping to discover.

In 1910 Census Ellen McGrath (Dee) is in St Louis Ward 28, St Louis City Misouri with her husband Daniel Dee b. Ireland 1874. Child Helen Dee 3 months & sister Mary McGrath a.23 arrived 1908.

Helen Dee (Ellens daughter) married John Michael Mohan 1910-1966.
They had 2 daughters (still living so details not available)
1 son John Michael Mohan Junior 1935-2004 (his family details not available as still living) :)

Many Thanks for all the replies - much appreciated!

I'm hoping that one of the descendants might just happen to be tracing their ancestry, discover this notice and make contact.

Relentlessly optimistic!  :)

Cheers,
SuasAnAbhainn.

Do you know her father's occupation? do you have a more exact location than Co. Kerry?

Only 2 Edward McGraths in Co. Kerry in 1911 census- neither married & one quite elderly:

I am one of the FTDNA admins for the R-L226 haplogroup project which is one of three known Irish only haplogroups. L226 is Dal gCais in origin and Sir Conor O'Brien, a direct male descendant of King Brian Boru belongs to L226. There are eleven McGrath testers to at 67 markers. One branch (DC201) is genealogical in nature since 17 of 19 testers are either McCraw, McGraw or McGrath. Other branches including McGrath include: DC63, DC106, DC205, FGC12296 and FGC12290. We now have 46 branches under L226. Of the 522 testers, 80 % of testers with any ties to Europe are found in five Irish counties: Clare, Tipperrary, Limerick, Kerry and Cork. Another 10 % are in the rest of Ireland (probably recent movement within Ireland). The remainder are primarily in England with a few in other countries.

L226 is one of the most researched haplogroups in the world with 522 testers at 67 markers and around 25 % have tested around 40 to 45 known branches. This allows us to now chart the connections between 80 % of the testers:

http://www.rcasey.net/DNA/R_L226/Haplotrees/L226_Home.pdf#Page=22

You might want to consider testing 67 YSTR markers at FTDNA to see if you match these McGrath or McGrath variant surnames. If you do match, you can contact your matches via email to exchange traditional genealogical sources:
