Hi...could anyone help me with the names on this census...
I have Henry and Mary Butterworth....and then Emily? and not clear of the following names...and the last occupation? Thanks :)
-
I can see Laura Butterworth....and Alfred...and then is that Walt Wm?
-
I'd go with Walt. Wm - who is a Midshipman.
What I see is:
Henry Butterworth
Mary Butterworth
Emily Hansen
Car. A Butterworth
Laura Butterworth
Alfd Butterworth
Walt. Wm. Butterworth
Flor. M. R. Shepherd
Gert. M. E. Hansen
-
Thanks, and the last two names?
-
This is what I think-
Hen. Butterworth Grocer and Tea Dealer
Mary Butterworth
Emily Hanson
Car. A. Butterworth (Caroline?)
Laura Butterworth
Alfred Butterworth Clerk
Walter William Midshipman
Flor.M.R. Sheppherd (Florence?)
Gert. M.E. Hanson (Gertrude?)

Hi,
Looks like Emily HANSEN, Widow to me.
Leanne

Excellent....thank you all for your help!
KGarrard, you are a legend...thanks for finding the birth. I think I have found a marriage.
This is one of those that slip through the censuses. Emily is back with her family in 1891, listed as Butterworth, and I nearly missed the Hanson marriage, as I only found the 1881 census today, because she is not transcribed with her parents, even though she should be :) Thanks again.
(she has another son I think, Arthur...haven't found his birth yet...how do you find them so fast KGarrard!?)
-
...how do you find them so fast KGarrard!?
I use FreeBMD!
Another birth:
June qtr 1864
Clerkenwell district vol 1b, page 577
Butterworth, Walter William
September qtr 1862
Clerkenwell district vol 1b, page 533
Butterworth, Alfred
-
And, to complete the picture:
December qtr 1849
Clerkenwell district vol 3, page 92
Butterworth, Emily
March qtr 1857
Clerkenwell district vol 3, page 524
Butterworth, Caroline Alice
December qtr 1858
Clerkenwell district vol 3, page 535
Butterworth, Laura

Thank you so very much.
The ones I am having trouble finding is Arthur Hanson, b. 1873 and now I have discovered what appears to be another daughter Edith...both children for Emily Hanson.
Edited to add: Think I have found Arthur...he's down as Arthur William S - think I will stick to freeBMD myself now!
-
Found the following baptisms:
5th September 1875 at St John's, Fulham
to William Matthew & Emily, of Cedar Road, St James
Edith Mary Tamar Hanson
Gertrude Marion Ellen Hanson
William's occupation: Deputy Superintendent Registrar of Births &c
30th June 1872 at St Matthews, City Road (Islington?)
to William Matthew & Emily, of St John 'o Street Road
Arthur William Sweetland Hanson
William's occupation: Lawyer's Clerk
-
wow, that latest find is excellent. Thanks Kgerrard.
The family are a bit sad I think...Arthur, the son of Emily is in an Orphans Asylum in 1881...would love to find out why..am going to try and contact the records office...apparently there are some good records for this particular asylum to be found.
-
I think the last two are grand daughters
looks like Flor Shepard age 9 and Gerl Hanson age 5

As mum Emily was widowed, presumably left without income, and moved back to Mum and Dads with her 5 yr old dtr, maybe there just wasnt room for, or funds to support, another child too.
Red writing frm peggy - yes, they were grandchildren of the Butterworths - Gertrude Hanson being child of the widowed daughter Emily Hanson nee Butterworth
-
Thanks Peggy :)
Yes it looks like that lizdb - just found the other daughter at a different orphanage. Thankfully they all appear to be reunited on later censuses. How hard times must have been back then to have to make those kind of choices.

Considering William's occupation (Deputy Superintendent Registrar) at Edith & Gertrude's baptism, I would have thought the family would have been provided for?
It just seems a little strange, to me?
