Morning all,
I've found a record on the NZ Archives for a James GOATER who was a member of the 9th Reinforcements Wellington Infantry Battalion, B Company.
His next of kin is listed as his mother, Mrs M Goater of Park Row, Nottingham. I have this family as part of my wider Goater family tree and believe this to be Maria Goater (nee Goodson) who was living at 25 Park Row, Nottingham at the time of the 1911 census with her daughter Henrietta.
I'm a bit mystified as I've never come across a James in the family. The only member unaccounted for is an Alfred Percy George Goater born 1871 in Nottingham who I am struggling to find on any census.
I've checked passenger lists and there is a Jas Goater, age unknown leaving London on the Athenic for NZ on 22/7/1910. He is listed as single & a farmer - which would perhaps tie in with his occupation of bushman on the army record? This doesn't tie in with the rest of his english family though (if he is the mysterious Alf PG) as they were all printers.
Can anyone advise how I find out more about James?
Many thanks
Maria :)

Hi Maria, If the military James and unaccounted for Alfred have 1871 birthdates then they might be the same man...or twins! Do you have a copy of his military papers? If not you should request that they be digitised for reading online. It was not uncommon for names to change. My 2xgt grandfather was registered as Albert at birth but in every document thereafter he was Jesse.

Dear Althea, Janette & Alan
Thanks so much for your input.
Althea - thanks for the electoral roll details.
Janette - thanks for the marriage details - is that the date 1925? I have him marrying in England to an Ada M Barrett in 1918 so that's a bit confusing. Thinking about it though he'd be 50 so it would make sense that it was a second marriage?
Alan - great idea re the military records. Any idea how I get them digitised? I agree about the names - my lot do it all the time!!
Thanks so much for all your interest.
Best wishes
Maria :)

Hello,
You could try making contact with possible descendants through the 'New Zealand White Pages'.
There are only 8 listings for Goater for the whole of New Zealand.
Minniehaha. :)

Thanks Minnie, what a great idea. :)

Hi Maria,

Look for it on Archway http://archway.archives.govt.nz/ in about ten days.

Hi again Maria
Janette - thanks for the marriage details - is that the date 1925? I have him marrying in England to an Ada M Barrett in 1918 so that's a bit confusing. Thinking about it though he'd be 50 so it would make sense that it was a second marriage?
FreeBDM's have this Goater marriage
Marriages Mar 1918
Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page
Barrett Ada E Goater Christchurch 2b 1520
Goater George H C Barrett Christchurch 2b 1520
The district Christchurch is in the county of Hampshire
I don't see a marriage for a James Goater to Ada Barrett
Cheers Janette
-
Thanks so much Spades, that's very kind of you.
Janette - the query is whether George Henry Charles becomes James in New Zealand or whether he is Alfred Percy George Goater instead :) wish people would use the names they were given it would be much easier :)
Thanks for all yourhelp I really appreciate it.
best wishes
Maria ;D

Bingo!! just after your message Shades I checked again and it was finally available. You must have a read - brilliant!
Absolutely fascinating as in addition to his military record there is also correspondence confirming that James Goater and George Henry Charles Goater were one & the same person.
Even the army thought he was "James" until it was brought to their attention after his death.
Still a bit confused as to what happened to his first wife Ada M Barrett - the file notes that she did not come to NZ. His widow on his death in 1936 was Elizabeth Jane ???
Thanks for all your help Shades, it's fascinating stuff.
best wishes
Maria ;D
-
Now I know he was "James" I've found him on a passenger list, heading for NZ on the Athenic 15/01/1920. He's listed as married and intending to make his permanent residence in Wanganui.
I wonder what happened to Ada? There's a passenger record going to Saint John, Canada in 1923. Address 7 Stone Rd, Richmond Pk, Bournemouth.
Did he divorce her? did she die and when did he marry his second wife?
more questions than answers as usual, love it!
best wishes
Maria :)

I live in Wanganui. I have been to the local Heritage Library and looked up a card index of entries relating to newspaper entries. The following references are there relating to the Goaters.
Elizabeth Jane Goater D Dec 21 1986 88 years
George Henry Goater D Aug 8 1936 66 years Living at Rapanui Road Wanganui. (this is near Westmere , about 8 km out of Wanganui.)
G H 's son Claude Roland
C R's son James Henry
Others related are
Barry )
Clarice
Steven
Bruce
Bruce Jr (Bruce's son)
I went and saw Bruce Jr who said that he didn't think any family tree had been done,so he sent me to Steven who confirmed that. Bruce Jr is going to England in June this year.
Those names listed above Steven are all deceased. Steven told me that he believes that there are only about 8 Goater families in NZ and all related. You can get copies of the newspaper cuttings about these people by e-mailing a request to the Heritage Library ,Wanganui. Google it. Hope this helps.

Wow Big Guy
Thanks so much for taking all that trouble to find out information for me I'm extremely grateful.
It's great to know that the GOATER name is still going strong in New Zealand.
I wonder if I sent you my email by private message if you would be able to pass it on to Bruce or Steven. If they were interested in getting in touch I'd be happy to let them have information on their English family.
Best wishes and many thanks again
Maria ;D
-
That will be fine. I will pass it on to the best person to reply. Cheers
-
Hi Big Guy,
If you are in communication with the family, could you perhaps enquire if they have a photograph of James we could use for our project? There was only one Goater in the entire NZEF!
Regards
Matt

What a lovely idea Matt, I'd love to see a photo of James (or George Henry Charles to give him his full title).
best wishes

Hi Maria
Elizabeth Jane Satchwell who married George Henry Charles Goater was my father's sister i.e. my aunt although I have little memory of her & Geoge died before I was born. I do have some info of the Goater family in NZ. A couple of things you may wish to check out are two deaths for Ada M Goater on freebmd (Dec qtr 1934 aged 47 at Potsmouth 2b 698) & (Dec qtr 1938 aged 61 Bournmouth 2b 884) = 1938 less 61 i.e. born circa 1877. The only shipping records I can find are for Jas Goater 1910 London to NZ; J Goater 1919 Plymouth to NZ & James Goater 1920 Plymouth to NZ born 1869 (which ties in with the date of Geo H C Goaters date of birth 1868 & his date of death 1936 aged 66) Looks like from Wanganui Chronicle records he was also an Athlete. If you would like to send me a pm I'd be happy to send you a pdf file for the Goater info I have.
-
Hi Satchwell
how lovely to hear from you :) I'd love to see what info you have on GHC/ Jim - sending my email via pm and thanks for getting in touch.
Best wishes
Maria ;D

George Henry Charles Goater aka James Goater was my great-grandfather.
His second wife Elizabeth was my great-grandmother.
They had four children, Henry, Clarice, Claude and Hetty.
Clarice Marguerite Major (nee Goater) was my grandmother.
My cousin and I have just started completing this side of the family tree since my fathers passing last year but were unable to go back any further as we were unaware that he was known as James.
We would be greatly appreciate any further information you can give us, that hasn't already been shared on this forum.
