Hi, Searching for my relative who emigrated to Australia some time after 1901, have tried some ships lists but have had no luck. His name is Daniel Park from Wishaw Scotland (his occupation may have been a miner) he was born in Wishaw 29th Oct. 1871. his father was John Park mother Isabella Wilson married on 9th Nov. 1866 in Quarter Hamilton Scotland. Daniel Park was on the 1901 census so he must have left for Australia after that year but we don't know when. According to the family stories, he went to Perth Australia but it may also have been Adelaide. I know I havn't got a lot to go on, I've tried my best but I'm quite new at this research thing and I'm getting no-where at the moment, hope someone can help. Kind Regards Dobelove.

Dobelove, this question might be better on the Australia board where arrivals into the country can be checked. I think better records were kept of those arriving in Australia rather than leaving Scotland.
I will request that a moderator moves it for you if they think so too. :)
-
Hi
Have you checked to see if he is on the 1911 census as that will narrow the dates down to 10 years.

Hi Ruskie, That would be great. Thank you so much. Regards Dobelove.

Your post has now been moved dobelove - thank you Monica. :)
There are people here with access to various records who I hope will be able to find Daniel on immigration records.

Hi dobelove,
I cannot see him on immigration records to Australia ( but perhaps others can?).
I can't see his death in Western Australia http://www.bdm.dotag.wa.gov.au
I can't see his death in South Australia http://www.genealogysa.org.au
I can't see his death in NSW http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/
I can't see his death on ancestry in Australia.
It is a surprisingly uncommon name. On electoral rolls there is a Daniel Dunn Park in 1930 in NSW who then vanishes.
So sorry I am just reporting failure :(
On ancestors on board http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/ there is a Daniel Park going to NZ and five to Canada but none with correct birth date. I can't see his death in NZ https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz
regards,
Ros

I wonder if it could be one of his brothers (Thomas or James ) who came to Australia?
On ancestors on board I can see a Thomas Park b 1867 who travelled from London to Sydney, Australia in 1907 as well as some others without an age or birthdate which are also possible
I can also see some possibilities for James Park arriving in Australia.
regards,
Ros
adding : or brother Alexander?

I can see a Daniel Park age 26 arriving in 1926 on persic http://prov.vic.gov.au/ perhaps age has been mistranscribed

Hi ros, Thank you so much for taking the time to do some research for me. Daniel Park has been a bit of a mystery as it was my gran who used to talk about him living in Perth Australia and she said that he was also blind ( don't know how accurate this is) His birth date is definitely 29th oct. 1871 and as you mentioned he did have brothers, sorry I did'nt mention them as we thought that they had stayed in Scotland. He had brothers called Alexander Park born 9th may 1874. Thomas Park born 28th sept. 1865. James Park born 19th aug. 1868. He may also have had a brother called John but we are not sure. My gran only ever talked about her uncle Dan (Daniel) and not the other uncle's as she always said that he had went to Australia. I believe you have solved some of the mystery at least we know a bit more now. We were even thinking that he had came back to Scotland at some point as I did try to check for his death records in Australia but also came up zero. We were also told by my gran that Daniel Parks niece called Margaret Conn had emigrated to Australia in 1921 to stay with him when she first arrived there, however, the said Margaret Conn arrived in Adelaide in 1921 and stayed at 42 Unley road, Unley.S.A. until her sudden death in 1922. We don't even know who sent her belongings back to Wishaw in Scotland, maybe it was one of her uncle's. Sorry I have wandered onto another story there. If you have any more info. about Daniel Park's brothers I would be very grateful if you could let me know. Thanking you in anticipation, you have been so kind. Regards Dobelove.

Immigration records to not necessarily record all immigrants. If someone paid their own fare for example, there may not be records of them entering Australia. This may have happened to your Daniel. And lies were often told on immigration records too (one of mine shaved 10 years off his age. ;))
So Ros looking for death records was a good idea, unless, as you say, he headed back to Scotland at some stage.

Hi dobelove,
I haven't found anything definitive I'm afraid. :(
You can get a free transcription of death certificate for Margaret Conn from Unley Library http://www.unley.sa.gov.au/page.aspx?u=1234 although South Australian certs are not very informative.
I can see Miss Margaret Conn, age 25, nursemaid, departing 29-1-1921 from Glasgow to Adelaide on the Ascanius.
How very sad that she died so young - was it an accident?
(I've been searching for death notices for her in local papers hoping that they may give a clue to Daniel's whereabouts ... but no luck)
regards,
Ros

Death notices are a good idea Ros. Maybe Daniel's brothers deaths or wills (?) may be worth investigating.
(I did have a quick look for any mentions of Daniel Park on Trove but couldn't see anything obvious, then I had to go out ....)

Now trying to track down a Park living in Unley ...
In 1922 South Australian Directory (Sands) there is a Jas R Park at 321 Unley Road, Malvern Extension.
Did James have a middle name?
regards
Ros
adding : No I found his baptism

This is a strange story about an influenza epidemic which seemed to be localised to Unley Road in 1919 which was subsequently quarantined. The residence quarantined today was that occupied by Mrs Dick of 42 Unley Road where a child is suffering from influenza. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article63760132
Is there a Mrs Dick in the family?
regards
Ros

Hi,
Can't see that it is mentioned but Margaret is buried at West Terrace Cemetery.

Hi there, not sure if Daniel would pay his own fare as he was a general labourer not a very well paid job, however you never know. Thank you so much for your ongoing help with this. Kind regards Dobelove.

You are right, but some people were still able to afford the fares somehow.
Alternatively, a family member (or employer) could have paid his fare?
All speculation of course, but it may just be a reason why you can't find him on an immigration lists.
Do you know if Daniel had a middle name which he may have used rather than 'Daniel'?
-
Hi Ros, no sorry, Daniel did'nt have a middle name according to the list my cousin gave me from the I.G.I. index it lists all the possible children of John Park and Isabella Wilson and none of them have a middle name. (someone was helping him research but he gave up) You asked about a Mrs Dick but she is'nt a family member as I think Margaret Conn was working for her as a nursemaid at Unley road. Margaret Conn died in Ayres consumption home Adelaide and was buried in a paupers grave much to our distress as we thought she was in touch with her uncle Dan but obviously not. I have asked my mum and she said he was always called Dan or Daniel but as you said he could have changed his name for some reason or another. Thank you for the ongoing research, you are very kind. Kind regards Dobelove.

Debelove,
I checked an unassisted passenger list for New South Wales to which I have access. I find only one Daniel Park. He arrived in Sydney on 29 Apr 1906 from Cape Town on the Persic. He was 26. There are some entries for "Mr. Park," but they all were ships traveling between Austalian ports or between New Zealand and Australia. Sorry.

Hi Kathy, thank you so much for the information on Daniel Park, he has been a bit of a mystery as Ros managed to find Daniels brother Thomas Park arriving in Sydney 1907 but no info on Daniel arriving with him however now that you have given me your info, I wonder if Daniel had travelled the year before Thomas in 1906 and stopped off at Cape Town for a time and then travelled to Sydney as I noticed from the ships list that someone sent me regarding Margaret Conn(Daniels niece) that some of the ships from the UK stopped off at Cape Town and onwards to Australia. Daniel was age 35 in 1906 but I know that most of the time they seemed to knock some years off their age, so the Daniel you have found hopefully is mine as I have been told it is not a very common name. I cant even find a death record for him or his brother Thomas, so I dont know what has happened there. My gran always said that Daniel stayed in Perth Australia but I no one can seem to trace him there either. Thank you so much for your help, Kind regards Dobelove.

Hi Dobelove,
My source is arrivals in Sydney, NSW. I notice that the passengers are often just identified with a single initial. The crew sometimes have full names.
Seamen named Park in 1901: W. Park, 35, several entries from Brisbane or Tasmania; Thomas, 30, from Liverpool; Benjamin, 29, from London; and J., 24, from Liverpool.
Passengers named Park in 1901:
Miss, from Brisbane, 9 Feb on the "Burwah"
Mr. and Mrs. and 4 children, from Launceton and Devonport, 6 Jul, on the "Wakatipu"
Mr., from Cairns via Brisbane, 24 Oct, saloon class, "Alinga"
Mr. from New Zealand, steerage, "Waikare"
Miss from Singapore, 27 Dec, owner "Mary Park"
Mr. F., 23 Mar, from Brisbane, steerage, "Peregrine"
Mr. F., 2 Apr, from Brisbane, British citizenship, saloon, "Adelaide"
J., 22 Apr, from Frenault via Melbourne, single, male, "Coolgardie"
Messieur L. J., 7 Oct, saloon class, "Innamincka"
Ws., 21 Apr, "Afric"
My grandmother and 10 family members traveled from Scotland in 1910. On the passenger list, they are all named only by first initial.
I doubt if this is the only collection of arrivals. It's just what I could access easily.
Good luck.
Kathy

Hi Kathy, Thank you once again for the information, you have been very kind to do the research for me, I will try and piece the info to gether to see if I can figure out what is the most likely story. It would help if I could narrow it down a bit, but I only know that after the 1901 census he was not in Scotland and according to my gran he went to Perth Australia, he must have been writing to his family in Scotland as my gran could tell us that Daniel eventually went blind, however, you know how stories can get mixed up, so I'm not sure how accurate my info is, anyway, thank you so much for your help, it is very much appreciated. Kind regards from Dobelove. (Christine)
