I am trying to find out information about Maria McNally (b.1855) and her two children. In this quest I have found a death record on Ancestry in the BMD death index for England and Wales ( Jul-Sept 1891) the registration district is Oldham.
How can I retrieve more information about this death - I'm not sure it is the correct Maria McNally. Are these records available to the public ?

Hi Polly :)
If you give us more details about Maria and her two kiddies, we can trace them in census.
From there we can find out what happened to them.
Death details are not onine, you would have to send for the certificate.

I don't have alot of information - Maria had two children Margaret May, who was born at Wellington Street (Moss Side) on 17th May 1889, another child, Kate was older and possibly born in 1883 in London.
I have checked census record and have only been able to locate Margaret May living in Northern Ireland in 1901 with a relative. I also believe her sister Kate shows up in the 1901 census living / working not far from her, again in Northern Ireland.
I have been told that Maria died when Margaret May was very young and that the two children came to live with relatives in Northern Ireland.
I'm trying to get more details about who Maria Mc Nally was and how she fits into my family tree, so I thought that there might be additional details on her death records (if this is actually the correct Maria McNally).

Hello,
1891 has a Mary McNally in Oldham born 1855. I can't find any of that family in 1901 for certain so don't know if it is her or not. :-\
Was McNally her maiden name?
Are you basing her year of birth on that death or do you have other evidence of that?

do you think there is a possible link here or a complete red herring

Hi Polly,
we do need a bit more information.
You have Margaret May in Ireland with a relative.
So was Maria from there and is McNally her maiden name?
Also was she born 1855 or is that just from that death record?

Do you have any of the girls on 1891 census?
I have looked at Irish census and can't see any suitable entries there. Where do you have them in 1901?

Thank-you for all the responses
I'm not sure that the Maria McNally who died in Oldham (1891) is connected.
I don't think that Maria Mc Nally was married - at Margaret May's birth there is no father recorded. But that's not to say that she was married and widowed at Margaret May's birth in 1891. If this was the case then there is a possibility that Maria is a relative of mine.
I don't know a birth date for Maria - I'm taking 1855 from the death record which may not be her.
In 1901 Ireland Census Margaret May is recorded as "May Phlenphy" ( I really don't know how or why this name was recorded but I do know for certain that this is Margaret May) living in Bryansford Co Down her sister Kate Mc Nally, I believe, is living in Rathriland Co Down aged 18 her birth place is given as London.
I've tried checking the census in England prior to 1900 but have been unable to find any of the three women.
There is no census records for Ireland prior to this so I cannot check if there were living in Ireland. I will check the local school records in Co Down to see if that will give me anymore info.

No I don't think that the Oldham death is linked.
I can only see the name 'Phlenphy' for May's census entry. There are some spelling issues on the census form so it could be a mispelling or just made up perhaps.
I assume then that you are not sure how May is a cousin to the Cunningham family? Are there no McNallys in the family already?
There are 2 possible births for Catherine McNally
1882 St George, Hanover Square London
1884 St George in the East London
1891 has a Kate with parents Edward and Ada in St George Hanover Square district so perhaps the second one would be her - St G in the East.
Do you know that she is definitely the same family?
That birth certificate may give you some information.

Kate's entry in 1901 Irish census has a space between the Mc and the Nally
I'm certain that she was a sister (maybe a half sister) of Margaret May's.
I'll follow up on the second London birth (east London) and see if its the correct one.
I think its back to the drawing board - the school register at PRONI may throw something up for me.
Thanks for all the help

Yes, I found Kate in the census and have already tried McNally and Mc Nally for 1891 :-\
Good luck with the school enquiries and please let us know if you find anything.

To Polly19
My grandmother was Margaret May (Cunningham), and her sister was Kate. I believe we have the same people in common on your post. I know her mother's last name was McNally and understand my grandmother was born out of wedlock. Father was James Cunningham, which is why she was raised by Patrick and Catherine Cunningham in Newcastle, County Down, Ireland. She was in contact most of her life with Kate, but I have little knowledge of Kate other than her married name may have been Green (?).
What information do you have of Maria McNally? I know there was a McNally family in the Newcastle, Ireland area. I have a DNA link to the McNally's via a Mary Burns. Burns was the maiden name of my great grandmother Catherine Burns Cunningham.
